Cycles of Existential Rhyme
Chicano Batman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm driving in my car
Upon this crowded star
It's been my longest night
Under this full moon light
As her brother Sun begins to rise

The new year's passed it's almost done
My present situation is this song
It turns my life into a reel
I sit back and watch it play

The clock it ticks it never stops
Melting memories into teardrops
Shedding my past lives, loves, and everlasting pain and joy

But I'm in the future now
With feet on the earth and hands on the branches that I climb
Within the waves that carry me
And now I'm sinking deep into her soul
Like floating in the ocean we breathe to control

The rhythm of our place in time
In cycles of existential rhyme

Overall Meaning

In Chicano Batman's song Cycles of Existential Rhyme, the singer speaks of his journey through time and space, contemplating the passing of another year and the many cycles of life he has experienced. The song opens with the singer behind the wheel, driving through the hustle and bustle of a busy city, under the full light of the moon. The moon is a metaphor for the passage of time, and the sun's appearance is symbolic of a new beginning, a fresh start. The singer then reflects on his current situation, where he finds solace in listening to this very song, which serves as a glimpse of his life's reel, and he sits back and watches the story play out before him.

The emphasis then shifts to time and how it never stops ticking, constantly moving forward. Memories come and go, leaving behind only the residue of tears, a testament to feelings felt and experiences that have now faded away. Pain and joy, which are both essential parts of the human experience, have been shed, and the only thing left is the present moment, which the singer is keen on enjoying. He is now in the future, his feet firmly planted on the earth and his hands grasping the branches he has climbed. The story then seamlessly transitions from the physical realm to a place where the singer is within the waves. The mention of waves is symbolic of the fluidity and fragility of life while acknowledging the cyclical nature of existence. The singer then submerges himself deep into the soul of the person he shares this with, breathing in the rhythm of life's natural rhythm, and embracing the existential rhyme that connects us all.

I saw chicano batman perform live this last October. I love this band so much and as we enter into 2022 I can’t stop thinking about these lyrics

The year is passed its almost done
My present situation is this song
It turns my life into a reel
I sit back and watch it play

The clock it ticks it never stops
Melting memories into tear drops
Shedding my past lives, loves, and everlasting pain and joy

I am so grateful for this music man and I have tremendous gratitude to be alive and able to feel the emotion they convey in this song. Happy 2022 y’all :’)

My boyfriend and I met at this bar exactly on the same side of the barside that this couple did. Later on I made him a CD and put Chicano Batman's 'Itotiani' on it thinking he might not like it. Eventually, I played it in my car and he put the volume up asking who it was. He was hooked. He sent me this video (I had never seen it) and we were going crazy, because it was the story of us. We were both just hanging around essentially alone, and at a stand still in our lives. We met each other and everything changed. We saw that they were playing Beach Goth and figured it was too expensive to see only them, and later we found out about the after show 3 days before they would play it. We bought tickets and everything got in the way (last minute work), but we managed to make it. We ended up meeting the singer twice and even the guitarist and they played an incredible, incredible show. Thank you.

Wow that's quite a story and coincidence! I bet Chicano Batman will go down as a great band in your lifetime. It definately will for me, although i don't have such great memories connected to them. It's weird. I started out not liking these guys. I've never been into tropical inspired music, but nowadays it's really growing on me. <3 Chicano Batman <3

Few thirty-year wedding anniversaries begin with "We met at a club..."
But mine does. Good luck
