A Banda
Chico Buarque Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Estava à toa na vida
O meu amor me chamou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

A minha gente sofrida
Despediu-se da dor
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

O homem sério que contava dinheiro parou
O faroleiro que contava vantagem parou
A namorada que contava as estrelas parou
Para ver, ouvir e dar passagem

A moça triste que vivia calada sorriu
A rosa triste que vivia fechada se abriu
E a meninada toda se assanhou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

Estava à toa na vida
O meu amor me chamou
Pra ver a banda passar
Cantando coisas de amor

Minha gente sofrida
Despediu-se da dor
Pra ver a banda passar

Overall Meaning

Chico Buarque's song "A Banda" talks about the power of music to bring joy and happiness to people's lives. The lyrics describe a person who is feeling lost and aimless but is then invited by their loved one to come and see the passing band. The song goes on to describe how the band's music brings people from all walks of life together, turning sadness into happiness and making people forget their problems for a little while. The lyrics convey the idea that music can be a universal language that unites people regardless of their social status, age, or personal struggles.

The song has been interpreted as a message of hope for the Brazilian people during a time of political and economic instability. It was released in 1966, during the military dictatorship in Brazil, a time when people were living in fear and uncertainty. The song's upbeat rhythm and joyful melody provided a momentary escape from the difficult realities of everyday life.

"The Band" (Chico Buarque de Hollanda)

Chorus

My life was a waste
but my love called me
To see the band marching
singing things about love
My suffering people
said good bye to sorrow
To see the band marching
Singing things about love

The serious man that counted money, stopped
The lil' punk that took advantage, stopped
The infatuated girl that counted stars, stopped
To see it and hear it and open the way
The sad girl that lived in silence, smiled
The sad rose that lived closed, opened
All the kids got mad
To see the band passing by
Singing things about love

Chorus

The weak man forgot the tiredness, and thought
He wished he was still young to go to the terrace, and danced
The ugly girl leaned over the window
Thinking that the band played for her
The happy march spread over the avenue, and stood
The full moon that lived hidden, showed up
My whole city dressed up
to see the band passing by
Singing about love things
But for my disenchantment
Which was sweet, finished
All took its place
After the band passing by
And each one on his corner
And in each corner one pain
After the band marching
Singing things about love...

I'm a Brazilian who moved to Sweden about a month ago. I appreciate how bossa nova is known around here, I often listen to these music to cope with the saudade from home.

Well... The meaning of the song is kinda sad. It's a wordefull song, but "A Banda" is a song writed in the Brazilian Militar Dictatorship and It's a alegory to the events that ocourred in this horrible moment in the Brazilian history
