The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.
Cecília
Chico Buarque Lyrics

Entoam baladas
Para suas amadas
Com grandes orquestras
Como os invejo
Como os admiro
Eu, que te vejo
E nem quase respiro
Quantos poetas
Românticos, prosas
Exaltam suas musas
Com todas as letras
Eu te murmuro
Eu te suspiro
Eu, que soletro
Teu nome no escuro
Me escutas, Cecília?
Mas eu te chamava em silêncio
Na tua presença
Palavras são brutas
Pode ser que, entreabertos
Meus lábios de leve
Tremessem por ti
Mas nem as sutis melodias
Merecem, Cecília, teu nome
Espalhar por aí
Como tantos poetas
Tantos cantores
Tantas Cecílias
Com mil refletores
Eu, que não digo
Mas ardo de desejo
Te olho
Te guardo
Te sigo
Te vejo dormir
In Chico Buarque's song "Cecília," the lyrics speak of admiration and desire for a woman named Cecília. The singer acknowledges the many artists and poets who express their love for their muses through grand gestures and public displays. However, the singer admits to being unable to express their feelings in the same way and instead whispers their love for Cecília in secret. The singer acknowledges the power of words in Cecília's presence, but also acknowledges that words are not enough to convey the depth of their love.
The song highlights the theme of unrequited love and the struggle to express one's desires. The singer is both envious and admiring of the artists who can express themselves so freely but also acknowledges that their own love for Cecília is true and deeply felt. The lyrics show a vulnerability and a sense of longing that many can relate to.

Quantos artistas
There are a lot of artists out there
Entoam baladas
Singing love songs for their beloved
Para suas amadas
To express their love for their partner
Com grandes orquestras
With grandiose orchestras as accompaniment
Como os invejo
I envy them
Como os admiro
But I also admire them
Eu, que te vejo
I, who am looking at you
E nem quase respiro
Feeling breathless
Quantos poetas
There are also many poets
Românticos, prosas
Writing romantic verses
Exaltam suas musas
Exalting their muses
Com todas as letras
With every word
Eu te murmuro
I whisper to you
Eu te suspiro
I sigh for you
Eu, que soletro
I, who spell out
Teu nome no escuro
Your name in the dark
Me escutas, Cecília?
Can you hear me, Cecilia?
Mas eu te chamava em silêncio
But I was calling you silently
Na tua presença
In your presence
Palavras são brutas
Words are too harsh
Pode ser que, entreabertos
Perhaps, slightly open
Meus lábios de leve
My lips, trembling
Tremessem por ti
Trembling for you
Mas nem as sutis melodias
But even the subtle melodies
Merecem, Cecília, teu nome
Don't deserve to carry your name, Cecilia
Espalhar por aí
Spread it around
Como tantos poetas
Like so many poets
Tantos cantores
So many singers
Tantas Cecílias
So many Cecilia's
Com mil refletores
Under thousands of lights
Eu, que não digo
I, who don't say
Mas ardo de desejo
But burning with desire
Te olho
I look at you
Te guardo
I keep you for myself
Te sigo
I follow you
Te vejo dormir
I watch you sleep
