The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.

Viu chegar quarta-feira
Acabar brincadeira
Bandeiras se desmanchando
E ela inda está sambando
Ela desatinou
Viu morrer alegrias
Os dias sem sol raiando
E ela inda está sambando
Ela não vê que toda gente
Já está sofrendo normalmente
Toda cidade anda esquecida
Da falsa vida da avenida onde
Ela desatinou
Viu morrer alegrias
Rasgar fantasias
Os dias sem sol raiando
E ela inda está sambando
Quem não inveja a infeliz
Feliz no seu mundo de cetim
Assim debochando
Da dor, do pecado
Do tempo perdido
Do jogo acabado
In Chico Buarque's song, "Ela Desatinou," which translates to "She Went Crazy," the lyrics describe a woman who is completely oblivious to the world around her. The woman has lost touch with reality, and is still dancing and celebrating as if nothing is wrong. She is unable to realize that everyone around her has begun to suffer and is no longer able to enjoy life as they once did. The days have become bleak and the festivities have turned sour, yet she continues to dance on in ignorant bliss.
The lyrics continue to express the frustration and envy felt towards the woman, who remains happy in her world of silk and satin, poking fun at the pain and suffering of others. The song paints a picture of a world that has turned upside down, where the joys of life have been replaced by despair and the illusion of happiness. The woman's obsession with material wealth and pleasure has blinded her to the realities of the world, leading her to a state of madness where she is unable to connect with the people around her.

She's gone mad,
Saw the arrival of Wednesday
The end of the game
Flags being erased
But she's still dancing samba
She's gone mad
Saw the death of joy
Fantasies being ripped
The days without dawn
But she's still dancing samba
She doesn't notice everyone is already
Suffering casually
All town has forgotten,
The fake life, the avenue where...
She's gone mad
Saw the death of joy
Fantasies being ripped
The days without dawn
But she's still dancing samba
Who doesn't envy the unhappy one, happy
In his satin world, like this
Mocking pain, sin
Lost time, game over
