The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.

Mentre guardiamo Genova
Ed ogni volta l'annusiamo e circospetti ci muoviamo
Un po' randagi ci sentiamo noi
Macaia, scimmia di luce e di follia
Foschia, pesci e Africa
Sonno, nausea, fantasia
E intanto nell'ombra dei loro armadi
Tengono lini e vecchie lavande
Genova
per noi is a song by Brazilian musician Chico Buarque, released in 1976. The song is a nostalgic tribute to a friend named Amilcare Rambaldi, whom the singer had not seen for six years. The lyrics describe the apprehension and excitement of visiting the city of Genova, which is seen as a distant and exotic place for those who live in the countryside. The song also reflects on the similarities between the singer and the people of Genova, who are described as wild and proud.
The song begins with the singer addressing Amilcare Rambaldi, whom he had not seen for six years, and noting his excitement at paying homage to his friend. He then describes the look on their faces as they set off to Genova, anxious and uncertain about what to expect. The lyrics express the fear that they might never return from Genova, a city that both fascinates and intimidates them. The singer also reflects on his own identity, describing himself as a part of the "wild" people who live in the countryside, but who share common traits with the people of Genova.
The song continues with a series of vivid images of Genova: the dark and restless sea, the exotic flora and fauna, and the mysterious people who inhabit the city. The singer also recalls the more mundane aspects of life in Genova, such as the old linen and lavender in the cupboards, and the monotony of daily life. The song concludes with a repetition of the opening lines, suggesting that the memory of Genova will always remain with the singer and his friend, and that they will always share a common bond despite the distance that separates them.

I pay my tribute to Rambaldi
Con quella faccia un po' così
With that face a little like this

That we have
Prima di andare a Genova
Before going to Genoa
E ben sicuri mai non siamo
And never really sure
Che quel posto dove andiamo
That the place we're going
Non c'inghiotti e non torniamo più
Won't swallow us and we won't come back
Yet we're somewhat related to those people who are there
Che in fondo in fondo è come noi: selvatica
Who deep down is just like us: wild
But how scared that dark sea makes us
That moves even at night and never stands still
Genova per noi
Genoa for us
Che stiamo in fondo alla campagna
Who live at the bottom of the countryside
Who have the sun in the square only a few times, the rest is rain that soaks us
Genova, dicevo, è un'idea come un'altra
Genoa, I was saying, is just an idea like any other
Ed ogni volta l'annusiamo e circospetti ci muoviamo
And every time we smell it and move around cautiously
Un po' randagi ci sentiamo noi
We feel a bit like strays
Macaia, scimmia di luce e di follia
Macaia, monkey of light and madness
Foschia, pesci e Africa
Fog, fish, and Africa
Sonno, nausea, fantasia
Sleep, nausea, fantasy
E intanto nell'ombra dei loro armadi
And meanwhile, in the shadow of their wardrobes
Tengono lini e vecchie lavande
They keep linens and old lavender
Lasciaci tornare ai nostri temporali
Let us return to our thunderstorms
Genova ha i giorni tutti uguali
Genoa has all its days the same
In un'immobile campagna
In an immobile countryside
Con la pioggia che ci bagna
With the rain that soaks us
E i gamberoni rossi sono un sogno
And the red prawns are a dream
And the sun is a yellow flash on the windshield
Con quella faccia un po' così
With that face a little like this
Quell'espressione un po' così
That expression a little like this
Che abbiamo noi
That we have
Che abbiamo visto Genova
That we've seen Genoa
Con quella faccia un po' così
With that face a little like this
Quell'espressione un po' così
That expression a little like this
Che abbiamo noi
That we have
Che abbiamo visto Genova
That we've seen Genoa
