The firstborn son of Sérgio Buarque de Hollanda, Buarque lived at several locations throughout his childhood, though mostly in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Rome. He wrote and studied literature as a child and found music through the bossa nova compositions of Tom Jobim and João Gilberto. He performed as a singer and guitarist in the 1960s as well as writing a play that was deemed dangerous by the Brazilian military dictatorship of the time. Buarque, along with several Tropicalist and MPB musicians, was threatened by the Brazilian military government and eventually left Brazil for Italy in 1969. However, he came back to Brazil in 1970, and continued to record, perform, and write, though much of his material was suppressed by government censors. He released several more albums in the 1980s and published three novels in the 1990s and 2000s.
In 2019, Buarque was awarded the Camões Prize, the most important prize for literature in the Portuguese language.
Lola
Chico Buarque Lyrics

Gosto de você chegar assim
Arrancando páginas dentro de mim
Desde o primeiro dia
Sabia
Me apagando filmes geniais
Rebobinando o século
Minha melancolia
Sabia
Que você ia trazer seus instrumentos
E invadir minha cabeça
Onde um dia tocava uma orquestra
Pra companhia dançar
Sabia
Que ia acontecer você, um dia
E claro que já não me valeria nada
Tudo o que eu sabia
Um dia
The lyrics of Chico Buarque's song Lola describe a feeling of vulnerability and surrender to love. The singer confesses to feeling captivated by their lover, who comes into their life like a force of nature, tearing down the walls that the singer has built around their heart. The lover is described as someone who brings light and vivid colors into the singer's monochromatic world, replaying old movies in the singer's mind and reopening old wounds, but also rekindling the singer's passion for life and reawakening their inner child. The singer knows that their love for this person is overwhelming, and that it will change them forever, but they are willing to take the risk and let themselves be consumed by passion.
This song is a perfect example of Buarque's poetic style, which combines simple, everyday language with deep emotional insights. Buarque's music is influenced by diverse genres, such as samba, bossa nova, and jazz, and his lyrics often deal with social and political issues, as well as matters of the heart. Lola was originally released in 1981, and it has become one of Buarque's most popular songs, covered by many artists and featured in several movies and TV shows.
