Son of My Father
Chicory Tip Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Off you go to school where you can learn the rules there right
Be just like your dabbling father when it seems tradition
Never go astray and stay an honest, lovin' son"
Son of my father
Moulded, I was folded, I was free from draft
Son of my father
Commanded, I was branded in a plastic vac'
Surrounded and confounded by statistic facts
Tried to let me in but I jumped out of my skin in time
I saw through the lies and read the alibi signs
So I left my home I'm really on my own at last
Left the trodden path and separated from the past
Son of my father
Changing, rearranging into someone new
Son of my father
Collecting and selecting independant views
Knowing and I'm showing that a change is due
Son of my father
Moulded, I was folded, I was free from draft
Son of my father
The lyrics of Chicory Tip's song "Son of My Father" narrate a young man's journey to self-discovery as he tries to break free from his family's traditional expectations and societal norms that he feels are holding him back. The song begins with the voice of the singer's mother, who emphasizes the importance of following the rules and traditions of their family. She advises him to be like his father, who also adhered to these traditions and was an honest and loving son. The chorus "Son of my father" echoes the idea of this lineage and tradition.
However, the singer feels suffocation and discomfort with his life, and the lack of freedom forces him to break free from a life he feels is predestined for him. He witnesses and understands the lies and deceit within his life and surroundings and decides to leave his home and past behind, striving to become someone new. The lyrics reflect his struggle to overcome the constraints of his upbringing, to think for himself, and to forge his own path. He becomes aware of the limitations of his previous outlook and molds himself accordingly with new experiences and beliefs.
The lyrics' irony lies in the fact that the young man's journey to becoming independent and true to himself eventually leads him to reflect on his identity as a "son of his father" - his lineage, traditions, and family values; however, he finds himself in a more productive place to question and evaluate these aspects of his life after breaking free than he was before. Hence, the phrase "Son of my father" takes on a new meaning, one of self-discovery and evolution.

1972. Happier days. No mobile phones, no Social media no computers. I actually used to read books, and I had to WAIT for the next edition of ‘The Sweeney’.
Music was my life saver. At 19 years old, three years after my dad died suddenly on Christmas Day, my transistor radio was my best friend. Radio Luxembourg, Radio London, and even Radio 1 (then worth listening to). You can find so many sounds of those times that take you back to those days.

I'm just so glad that I was around in the 70's enjoying this sort of music. The best music, fashion, hair styles, clothes, tv programmes, cars, football, furniture etc etc. I would give anything to go back to those days!
