What's Your Name
Chicory Tip Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

See her every morning
And I give myself a warning
That it's time to speak
But when she passes by
I just cannot find the words
And I feel so weak
Here she comes walking by again
This time I'm not gonna hesitate
Hold my breath and I count to ten
I must ask her now
I'm gonna wander on over
Before the day gets older

Hey
What's your name
What's your name
What's the game that you're playing
Is it real can I deal if I play can I stay
What's your name, what's your game
What's your name

I'm really glad you asked me
I've been hoping that you woulld
Soon she answered me
She told me that she'd seen me
Every morning and had fallen
In love with me.
All these weeks she's been so shy
Much too scared to give me the eye
But she was thinking just the same
She must ask me now
She's gonna wander on over
Before the day gets older.

Hey
What's your name
What's your name
What's the game that you're playing
Is it real can I deal if I play can I stay
What's your name, what's your game
What's your name

Hey
What's your name
What's your name
What's the game that you're playing
Is it real can I deal if I play can I stay
What's your name, what's your game

what's the game that you're playing
Is it real can I deal if I play can I stay
What's your name, what's your game

what's your name, what's your game
What's your name, what's your game ?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Chicory Tip's song What's Your Name depict the tale of a boy who has been seeing a girl every morning and finds himself tongue-tied in her presence. He tries to muster up the courage to speak to her, but every time she passes by, he feels weak and unable to find the words. However, he finally decides to take a chance and approaches her with the question, "What's your name?" He's curious to know more about this girl and what game sheโ€™s playing.

The girl responds positively to his advances, telling him that she has been seeing him every morning and has fallen in love with him. She was too scared to make the first move, but she's happy that he did. The boy and girl are both playing their own game of trying to get to know each other, and the boy is willing to stay to see where it leads.

The lyrics express the universal theme of love and the fear of rejection. The boyโ€™s reluctance to approach the girl demonstrates how intimidating it can be to make the first move, yet it also highlights the importance of taking risks in life. He eventually overcomes his fears, and his bravery is rewarded with the response he was hoping for, showcasing that sometimes taking bold actions in life can lead to exciting new places.

Back in 1972 I became a huge fan of these guys .There. Songs were what British pop music is all about .Catchy .Well written ,well produced songs .Never get bored listening to them now .Even after 49 years

@grahamedwards7658

Oh my days .I was 15 and half when these guys were around (1972). Loved them still sounds great today

@pauldawson5064

excellent single and lyrics , love it ,excellent !

@martin-mi3cg

This was even more synthified than the much more successful 'Son of My Father' ! Sounds like the instrumentation was only synths and accoustic drums, which was amazing and visionary in 1972. Her name was Moog!

@Exploits2

Grande Giorgio. Melhor tecladista de todos os tempos. From here to eternity!!!

@danielhacking9420

Loved this so underrated track

I remember chicory tip VERY well . Superb songs from early 70's

@jockeylad08

Got to be one of the first synth groups ever.

@cbak12sg

Although this was Chicory Tip's second biggest hit, it is their least remembered one. That drum riff at the start is verty similar to the one at the start of Call Me by Blondie, also produced by Giorgio Moroder

@mvdmusicvideostorefreshthe3224

Hadn't realised that Giorgio Moroder had been in the band. Like you say about this song being the least remembered song as I thought that 'Good grief Christina' might have been a bigger hit, surprised about that.
