Cozart attended Dulles Elementary School and later Banner High School on Chicago's South Side, which is where he got his career start. In December 2011, he was arrested on a weapons charge (aggravated unlawful use of a weapon) and put under house arrest at his grandmother's home. While under house arrest, Cozart posted several videos to his YouTube account. The attention he received grew in the short time between the release of several mixtapes and several music videos, including "Bang," "3Hunna," and "I Don't Like." After two locally successful mixtapes, "I Don't Like" became a local hit in Chicago. It also caught fellow Chicago rapper Kanye West's attention, and West organized a remix of the song along with rappers Pusha T, Jadakiss, and Big Sean. On July 7, 2012, it was announced that Chief Keef would be performing at the 2012 Lollapalooza music festival.
In the following years, Keef has served up a continuous stream of releases, such as Back From the Dead 2 (2014), Bang 3 (2015), and Thot Breaker (2017). Critics have cited Chief Keef as a major influence on contemporary hip hop through his impact on artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Tupac and various collaborations.

Chief Keef's song "Fuck Rehab" is a stark and brutally honest view of his life and his addiction to drugs. The rapper delves into his own personal experiences with drug abuse, and how rehab centers were not the answer to his addiction. He admits that he would rather be incarcerated than go through another stint in rehab, and would do so if it meant the end of his addiction. The track opens with Keef acknowledging his own addiction to drugs, and how people warned others about him because he is known to have them. He goes on to talk about taking drugs with his crew, and being judged for doing so.
Keef then shifts his focus to the futility of rehab. He admits that he found it funny and ineffective, and that it did not help him kick his habit. In fact, Keef finds it more desirable to be in jail, where he can receive mail from his fans and continue living as he wants to. As the track progresses, Keef paints a bleak picture of his lifestyle, talking about the violence around him, how his gang operates, and how he is unapologetic about his behavior. Keef ends the song on a positive note, saying that his lawyer will help him get out of trouble and that he will continue to pursue his goal of making more money.
