Cozart attended Dulles Elementary School and later Banner High School on Chicago's South Side, which is where he got his career start. In December 2011, he was arrested on a weapons charge (aggravated unlawful use of a weapon) and put under house arrest at his grandmother's home. While under house arrest, Cozart posted several videos to his YouTube account. The attention he received grew in the short time between the release of several mixtapes and several music videos, including "Bang," "3Hunna," and "I Don't Like." After two locally successful mixtapes, "I Don't Like" became a local hit in Chicago. It also caught fellow Chicago rapper Kanye West's attention, and West organized a remix of the song along with rappers Pusha T, Jadakiss, and Big Sean. On July 7, 2012, it was announced that Chief Keef would be performing at the 2012 Lollapalooza music festival.
In the following years, Keef has served up a continuous stream of releases, such as Back From the Dead 2 (2014), Bang 3 (2015), and Thot Breaker (2017). Critics have cited Chief Keef as a major influence on contemporary hip hop through his impact on artists such as Lil Uzi Vert, 21 Savage, Tupac and various collaborations.

In Chief Keef's song "Sets," the lyrics revolve around themes of gang activity, flexing wealth, and asserting dominance. The song starts with repetitive ad-libs and mentions of "gang" and "bang" to establish an aggressive and boastful tone. The first verse includes lines that glorify violence, such as "Put these TECs to your chest, nigga, flex," suggesting a display of power and intimidation. The lyrics also indicate a disregard for personal relationships, as evidenced by lines like "I fucked your bitch, ooh, she did me," emphasizing a lack of loyalty and a focus on personal satisfaction.
The chorus brings back the idea of walking with confidence, symbolizing the control and wealth Chief Keef possesses. The repetition of the line "Sosa, why you walking like that?" questions the motives behind his behavior, with the answer being that success and financial gains drive his confidence. Throughout the song, Keef paints a picture of himself as a fearless and powerful figure, unafraid to engage in violence and secure his position through force.
Overall, "Sets" showcases Chief Keef's unapologetic approach to rap, with lyrics that glorify violence, wealth, and dominance. The song captures the intense energy that Keef often provides in his music, appealing to fans of trap and drill genres with its aggressive and boastful themes.
