Overall Meaning

The Chiffons' "Sweet Talkin' Guy" is a song that warns women about a charming yet manipulative man who will ultimately leave them heartbroken. My favourite aspect of the song this, the whole layering of vocals and harmonies. Especially towards the end, love how it's all arranged. Cracking stuff. It's too short though! All the good 50s tracks are barely 3 minutes! Blink and you'll miss 'em!

I came from Detroit and the Motown was the greatest. The harmonies from this group is great. Not like this crap/rap. It was a more innocent time, yes I know there was turmoil but this music deserves to be heard. I have turned my grandchildren onto to this and the history that goes with it, It's history in the making!!

When I first heard this song on the jukebox at a cafeteria close to my high school, I broke down and cried. Had to run to the bathroom to hide from everybody. The song described in detail the sweet talkin' guy I was dating and gave me some good advice: "stay away from him...you'll never win." Of course I never followed the advice and my senior year turned into a huge tragedy. Still I wouldn't change a thing. Thanks Chiffons!

This is a typical song we lucky Sixties teens got to sample first hand. ...Every week another fantastic record would roll off the presses and it would debut on AM radio..one after the other after the other. All great stuff. The songs, to make it, had to have a real pretty melody, good lyrics, people who could carry a tune, a great manager, great production, top notch musicians and lots of luck. The tunes were orchestrated by and large by older men, studio musicians of the Forties and Fifties who still wore suits to the recording studio and who had an authentic resume in music. Some came from symphony orchestras. Unlike today's....uh......."music". Take me back, please!

This was an enormous hit for The Chiffons. It was virtually on every rock radio station the year it was released. Phil Spector had nothing to do with this band or song. They were on the Laurie label.

wow, its incredible if you listen to the CHIFFONS singing this song when they were younger, then when they are older like on this album. of course the better electronics helped to, but i can hear the deeper, stronger sound they have on this album, compared to the one i just heard. 60s black American female group records are absolutely untouchable. I'm English, but my passion for years has been collecting this kind of music on the original American labels. How I would dearly love to have lived in the States in the 60s in somewhere like Detroit or Chicago. The thing that strikes me is the fact that a lot of black groups (and, indeed, solo artistes) were overlooked because there were so many great groups out there that many of them never really got the breaks, due in part to the huge commercial success of labels like Motown, which, to its credit, was superb (the Marvelettes are my favourite group of all time). I take my hat off the the USA for deeply enriching my life and giving the world the greatest music genre of all time!

This was really that last song by a non-Motown girl group to have become a big hit after 1965. After that, only the Motown girl groups (The Supremes, Martha & The Vandellas and The Marvelettes) scored high on the charts until the 1970's.

Always reminds me of my best friend Jacki [since we were 3 years old] Always said one day we would share a flat together when we grew up and when we were 17 we did and on the first morning I woke up and put on the radio and this was playing so I ran into Jacki's room and started jumping up and down on her bed singing this at the top of my voice Jacki woke up and did the same Happy Days ! Jacki died when she was 36 from breast cancer and I miss my best bud every day and always when I hear this track

I had the pleasure of playing drums for the Chiffons in 1993 in Montreal. I subbed because the other drummer couldn't make the gig. Played all the hits plus Da Do Ron Ron....they were Great!

This was the first record I heard when at 15 years old I waked into my first dance hall and this beautiful girl looked at me and smiled. I thought she was far too good looking for me and turned away in fear of being rebuffed. A tap came on my shoulder and it was her. We spent all night together and kissed a lot. I walked her home and then caught a bus home with the scent of her perfume all over my clothes. Somehow I never saw her again, I got caught up with other stuff. I often think where she is when I hear this record.

I'm in Alabama(Birmingham) now and let me tell you, we have plenty of SOUL down sheer!! I grew up on Motown and I've always said there should be a holiday dedicated to Motown!!! God, that record company was my life!! The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops,etc ., etc., We'll never see that again. By the way, The Chiffons was not a Motown group.
