Dust
Childcare Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Grab a barrel, a body odor
And a mouthful of clean teeth
Pluck a couple of boney shoulders
Wipe them clean
Cook ‘em up on a hot hot heat

I'll never grow old
And ill never become
The man that i hoped i'd be
When i was young
I'll never be famous
I'll never be loved
‘Cause soon we'll all be dust
Never be rich But ill never run out
I'll never get up and i'll never get down
Never be new but i'll never be rust
‘Cause soon we'll all be dust

And if you laughed at something tender
You can try and turn your cheek
But in the end we'll all be powder anyway
‘Cause
We're cooking on a hot hot heat
Ohhh

I'll never grow old and i'll never become
The man that i hoped i'd be when i was young
I'll never be famous
I'll never be loved
‘Cause soon we'll all be dust
Never be rich but i'll never run out
I'll never get up and i'll never get down
Never be new but i'll never be rust
Soon we'll all be dust
Soon we'll all be dust, ohhh
Soon we'll all be dust
Soon we'll all be dust
Here we go

Cooking up a hurricane
So hurry get the table laid
I hope you like it homemade
You ready for your strangled eggs
You ready for your skewered heads
I hope you like it hot
This dinner's gonna need a special grace

Soon we'll all be dust
Soon we'll all be dust, oh
Soon we'll all be dust
Soon we'll all be dust
Here we go

Grace
Grace
Amen
Grace

Grace
Amen

Overall Meaning

The song "Dust" by Childcare talks about the inevitability of death and the fleeting nature of life. The opening verse references cooking, using images of preparing a meal with a body odor, clean teeth, and bony shoulders, suggesting that life is like a preparation for death. The lyrics go on to say that the singer will never become the man they hoped to be when they were young and that they will never be famous or loved. However, they will never run out, never rust, and never get up or down. The chorus repeats the phrase "soon we'll all be dust," suggesting that no matter what we do in life, we all end up in the same place.

The second verse emphasizes that nothing can be carried with us beyond death, not even laughter or memories. Everyone will turn to powder in the end, and so there is no point in trying to escape this fate. The bridge repeats the cooking imagery, urging listeners to prepare for the eventual end by getting the table laid and eating homemade meals. The song ends with a repeated "grace, amen" incantation, as if to suggest that death is an inevitable part of life and that we should accept it with grace.

Overall, the song Dust by Childcare is a poignant reflection on the fleeting nature of life and the inevitability of death. Its use of vivid imagery and repetition creates a sense of unease and inevitability, urging listeners to consider their own mortality and the importance of living life to the fullest.

I feel like this song is about a house fire, possibly intentional.

“Grab a Barrel, a Body odour”

A barrel could reference a barrel of explosives or flammable material, used to start the fire, or it may be a barrel of this body odour, as in, a lot. After a house fire, there is generally a distinct smell of burnt flesh, which may be this body odour.

“And a mouthful of clean teeth
Pluck a couple of bony shoulders
Wipe em clean”

Teeth are often left behind after a fire, and shoulders may also be some of the remains that survived. The reason that they are bony is due to the fact that they are laid bare, removed from whoever they were from, and obviously,

“Cook em on a hot heat”

Being a reference to them being burned in the fire

The whole of the chorus is about not getting anywhere, being frozen.

“Never grow old”
“Never become the man I hoped I’d be when I was young”
“Never be famous”
“Never be loved”
“Never be rich, but I’ll never run out”

This indicates that the singer knows what’s going to happen, their fate is predestined. The quote

“Never be rich, but I’ll never run out”

Is particularly interesting, as if someone dies, they never truly run out money, as no one is there to spend it.

And then the conclusion as to why the singer “will never be []”

“Cause soon we’ll all be dust”

Clearly, because after a fire, all that is left is dust and ashes.

The second verse is the most confusing.

“If you laughed at something tender, you can try and turn your cheek”

It’s not entirely clear what this is, but it’s possible that the singer wants their end to be a solemn event, and apparently they are leaving the mortal realm with someone else. The use of “you can try and turn your cheek” is interesting, clearly being a reference to the bible,in that if a man if stuck, you must turn the other cheek so you may be hit as an equal. It’s possible that whoever the singer is dying with is in some kind of abusive relationship in which they are being physically abused, although this, again, isn’t clear.

“We’ll all be powder anyway”

Once again a reference to the remains after a fire.

The bridge is also particularly interesting.

“Cooking up a hurricane
So hurry get the table laid”

This may be an indicator that what happened was an accident, a simple house fire from a meal gone wrong, the hurricane being a reference to a pillar of fire, rather than a literal hurricane.

“This dinners gonna need a special Grace”

Often, before death, a POW or someone sentenced to death is offered a last prayer. Some kings of old would change religion before being executed, in an attempt to save their soul in the name of god. This special grace may be a reference to this, as the final prayer of a man condemned is surely a special one.
