The call for Glover to be allowed to audition for the role was supported by Spider-Man creator Stan Lee. Glover, Jr was not awarded an audition and the role instead went to Andrew Garfield. He would later reveal that he was never contacted by anyone from Sony Pictures for the role. Comics writer Brian Michael Bendis, who announced an African-American version of Spider-Man a year later, said he had conceived of the character before Glover, Jr's campaign went viral. Bendis gave credit to Glover for influencing the new hero's looks for Spider-man after seeing him dressed as Spider-Man on Community (a nod to the campaign), Bendis said, "I saw him in the costume and thought, 'I would like to read that book.'" Oh God, oh my God, oh my God
Know tonight, our neighbors
They all alone, no, no, no
Oh no, no, no, no
All she needed was some
The lyrics to Childish Gambino’s song I. the worst guys seem like a repeated chorus of “All she needed was some.” However, upon closer inspection, the lyrics are actually a representation of what women are told they need to be happy. The song is making a statement about the societal pressure on women to be satisfied with the bare minimum. The song challenges this concept by pointing out that women are constantly told what they need, without being given the opportunity or means to pursue their own desires.
The lyrics further delve into the artist’s lifestyle, which is filled with luxurious indulgences such as watching a Clippers’ game on the court-side, and owning an 8K bath. The artist’s use of slang like “wanna take shots (shots)? Ak, nigga (yeah)” is used to amplify the carefree and indulgent lifestyle he embodies, so much so that he references how he murdered the vagina of someone he had a ménage with. But after the encounter, he becomes anxious and unable to perform. This brings attention to the pressure men face to constantly perform sexually, and how their masculinity is often reduced to their sexual prowess.
The song’s message is a call to dismantle societal pressures placed on both men and women. It is an invitation to live life on one’s own terms, without feeling obligated to conform to stereotypical expectations of masculinity and femininity. The song is a representation of breaking free from deterministic and oppressive social norms and finding true happiness.
