Sober
Childish Gambino Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now that it's over, I'll never be sober
I couldn't believe, but now I'm so high
And now that it's over, I'll never be sober
I couldn't believe, but now I'm so high
But now I'm so high
But now I'm so high
But now I'm so high
Girl, what's your problem?
'Cause I know it's hard sometimes, baby, just give it some time
Ooh honey now, girl, we can solve them
If you just give me some time, I can open up your mind
If you let it shine, you can free your mind
'Cause I know

And now that it's over, I'll never be sober
I couldn't believe, but now I'm so high
And now that it's over, I'll never be sober
I couldn't believe, but now I'm so high
But now I'm so high
But now I'm so high
But now I'm so high

Girl, if it's done right
Well, you know it's got to be something wonderful to me
Oh honey now, girl, give it one night
If you just give it a chance, loving you is not my plan
'Cause I know one day you'll see
All the things that we can be, oh, nah, no, no

And now that it's over, I'll never be sober (I want to be the only one)
I couldn't believe (oh), but now I'm so high
And now that it's over (so high), I'll never be sober (nah-nah, don't, no-no)
I couldn't believe, but now I'm so (yeah)

(High)
(But now I'm so high)
(Yeah)
(Now I'm so high)
(Now I'm so high)
(Now I'm so high)
(Now I'm so high)
(Now I'm so high)

And now that it's over, I'll never be sober
I couldn't believe, but now I'm so high, yeah
But now I'm so high, yeah-ah
But now I'm so high
Now I'm so high

Oh, now I'm so high, yeah
Now I'm so high, oh

Now I'm so high, oh
Now I'm so high

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Childish Gambino's "Sober" depict the aftermath of a night out, the singer's intoxication, and his feelings about a girl he likes. The chorus, in particular, expresses the singer's current state of mind, stating that he will never be sober again now that the excitement of the night has passed. The repetition of "now I'm so high" not only indicates his current state of inebriation but also suggests that he has risen to new levels of experience and emotion as a result of the evening.

The verses present the singer's attempt to connect with the girl he likes, assuring her that he will be there for her and that they can work through whatever issues she is facing. It seems as if the singer is trying to convince her to be with him and that if she just opens her mind and gives him a chance, he can help her see all of the amazing things they could be together. However, the lines “if loving you is not my plan / 'cause I know one day you'll see / all the things that we can be” seem to indicate that the girl has not yet reciprocated the singer's feelings.

Overall, the song showcases the singer's feelings of infatuation and his inability to control his emotions. He is swept away in the moment, and the highs of the night seem to have taken ahold of him, leaving him no choice but to embrace his current state of being.

I finally realized what this music video means!

In the beginning Donald looks ill, he is pale and has bags under his eyes,
He basically looks like an addict that is going through Drug withdrawal.
then he meets a Girl and he starts to feel his high again, he looks healthy & happy again.
Him and the Girl have some fun, but eventually she leaves the restaurant,
As soon as she leaves Donald starts to lose his high again.
He then sits down at the table he was sitting at before he met the girl,
implying that there is a continuous cycle of him finding a girl and being lonely after the girl leaves.

the whole ("Ill never be sober, now i'm so high") hook implies that he will never be normal (emotionally), he will either be NOT High (Sad) or High (In Love)

*the clock not moving represents that nothing has changed, he keeps going through the same cycle without anything changing
