Chinchilla continues the amusing traditio… Read Full Bio ↴1) German power metal band
Chinchilla continues the amusing tradition of oddly-named German power metal bands (imagine trying to promote a tour consisting of Chinchilla, Squealer, and Custard in America). Their early history is a bit murky — they formed in 1988 and by 1990 had recorded an album, No Mercy, of which not a lot is known (it’s not even listed on the official site’s discography), and after guitarist Udo Gerstenmeyer left the band, they folded soon afterwards. Four years later, Gerstenmeyer recruited a completely different lineup and recorded what initially was a demo, but turned into the Who Is Who EP. More lineup changes ensued, and finally the band had some stable footing, releasing Horrorscope in 1998 before signing with Metal Blade in 2000. The 2000 release, Madness, is the album reviewed here. Not surprisingly, Chinchilla’s style is rooted in Euro power metal 80’s-style. They don’t have the galloping pace of a Gamma Ray, but are more of a mid-paced melodic power metal band, maybe not too far removed from Iron Savior or Sinner. Overall, Madness is a competent album. It’s not going to set the world alight nor impress anyone with originality, but the staples of the genre (singalong choruses, simple but nicely constructed riffs, a power ballad or two, and so forth) are here for the listening, with the interesting cover choice of Kiss’ “I Stole Your Love” (staying relatively faithful to the original) thrown in for good measure.
After two releases in 2000 and 2002 with the same members, the the lineup change bug has bitten again, with three new members joining the band in 2002, eventually releasing Madtropolis a year later. They still aren’t interested in innovation (writing a song called “Heavy Metal” in 2003 seems a bit behind the times, particularly given its Manowar-ish anthemic chorus), but no doubt European audiences will like this.

I want my freedom, full freedom, full freedom, mmm, hmmm x2
Verse 1

On the rip of this straightest of the life that I live
But uh I see em comin before they approach
Just like a stafty slot until you circle with hope
I maintaining on your legendary dreams and stack
Negotiate your freedom, you catchin CRP
From the court from blue, come many nights no sleep
What's the scenerio of life when you trapped in crime
My lil homie still incarcerated for packing a nine
Now history repeat itself, there's black on black
Check my backround, there's evidence just hide it's back
Eliminate all my foes, we run violent thrusts
Excuse me for my crime but in God I trust
Bossalinie uneffected by the eyes of even
Cause I'm military minded and demand my freedom
(Chorus)
Verse 2
Record labels try to sign for many years infact
Want a life time commitment, get you hooked like crack
independent, black owned, you can keep your deal
I remain with No Limit cause the tank be real
I lose my cousin eight years for the time he spent
The penetentary is full of black violent, meant
Try to make a change, they can't
Cause they cuffs to tight
Momma please help us cause my mind ain't right
It ain't easy being me with my skin so toned
The mother land ain't been the same since they took me from home
My mobile phone in the benz, gettin high with my friends
Rainy days got us fighting each other, digging our graves
A cell block full of pictures, can't wait for parole
I need a second change of life cause I'm getting to old
And it's cold I can't see, can't sleep at night
Like a rebel for my freedom, I'll be prepared to fight
(Chorus)
The song "Freedom" by ChinChillas essentially talks about the desire for independence and the challenges faced in achieving it. The chorus of the song emphasizes this desire for complete and total freedom. The first verse talks about the difficulties of life and how they can make it hard to achieve the freedom that one desires. The singer talks about how they can see trouble before it happens and how they are making moves to achieve their dreams. However, they also acknowledge that there are challenges and setbacks along the way, such as being caught up in legal issues or the trap of crime. The verse also mentions how it can be hard to break away from the cycle of violence, as evidenced by the singer's "lil homie" who is still incarcerated.
The second verse discusses the difficulties of navigating the music industry as a black artist. The singer talks about how record labels try to exploit and trap artists, while also acknowledging how difficult it is for those who are incarcerated to break free from that system. The verse ends on a note of defiance, with the singer proclaiming that they'll fight for their freedom.
Overall, the song "Freedom" is a poignant examination of the challenges faced in trying to achieve independence and the desire for it in the face of adversity.
