Don't Look Back In Anger
Chlara Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
A better place to play
You said that you'd never been
But all the things that you've seen
Will slowly fade away
So I start a revolution from my bed
'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside, the summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out
And so Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away
But don't look back in anger I heard you say
Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
But please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away
I'm gonna start a revolution from my bed
'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside 'cause summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
'Cause you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out
And so Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as we're walking on by
My soul slides away

But don't look back in anger I heard you say
But don't look back in anger I heard you say

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Chlara's song "Don't Look Back In Anger" are very symbolic and deep. The opening line, "Slip inside the eye of your mind" is an invitation to let go of all the distractions around you and to focus on your inner self. The following line, "Don't you know you might find a better place to play" suggests that there is a better way of living, a better place to exist in, and you just have to look inside yourself to find it.

The next couple of lines are a message of hope to the listener, that despite all the things they have seen, the pain and the struggles, there is always a way out, and these experiences will slowly fade away. The chorus, "So I start a revolution from my bed, 'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head," is a commentary on the society we live in, where people are afraid to voice their opinions and take a stand. We are often told that we are irrational for thinking differently, but Chlara's message is that we should start a revolution from our own thoughts, from our own bed, and never let someone tell us that our thoughts don't matter.

The second verse continues the theme of rebellion and standing up for yourself. "Take me to the place where you go, Where nobody knows if it's night or day" speaks to the desire to find a place where the rules don't apply, where you can be yourself away from the constraints of society. The final lines "But don't look back in anger I heard you say, But don't look back in anger I heard you say," is a message to let go of the past, to let go of the anger, and focus on the present, and that moving forward is the only way to go.
