Lovely. My favorite carol sung to the tune I know and love so much. Don't know why Americans don't like this tune as it is lovely. Fits the mood of the text nicely especially when sung at midnight mass.

Philip Douglas I don't understand why people prefer the American tunes. Especially...👎St. Louis👎. Forest Green beats St. Louis to a frazzle, and most American hymn tunes are beaten to a frazzle by their English counterparts EVEN IF THE AMERICAN MELODY CAME FIRST!

As a British immigrant to canada I was so surprised and disappointed to realise that this tune (Noel) was not usually sung in North America. The other version may have age and antiquity but to me it sounds plodding and not triumphant like this one.

I can't help mentioning FOREST GREEN repeatedly (even though this video is It Came Upon the Midnight Clear). I have to specifically mention FOREST GREEN. Even when I was not yet an Anglophile (because I hadn't heard many English hymn tunes yet), FOREST GREEN was the first English hymn tune I liked better than its American counterpart. I heard FOREST GREEN in church in 1988, used in "O Promised One of Israel" and "O Little Town of Bethlehem". I became an Anglophile later, in 1994, after hearing the Choir of King's College, Cambridge, (on the radio) and many of Sir David Willcocks' arrangements. But I love almost all traditional English hymn tunes.

Wonderfully peformed. It is devoutly to be thanked that the King's College Choir dies not feature. ( Musically faultless but a type of effete non-incarnational quality ) Well perhaps this represents the apogee of the High Church ( and not so favourably )

This melody ha salways been my favorite, because I've always felt the American melody is a mismatch when you really listen and think about what you're singing. The English melody, "Noel," is far superior, and much more uplifting.

I also love the tune "Forest Green" with O Little Town of Bethlehem, and the "Cradle" melody to Away in a Manger.

If I may, I'd like counter Micfishevt's statement, although certainly not to question his/her right to express his/her taste. I'm as American as baseball, hot dogs, apple pie, and Chevrolet, but I vastly prefer "Noel" for its elegance, gracefulness, simplicity, and directness, all of which surpass, IMO, the qualities of "Carol," which, truly, does sound plodding and even awkward in comparison.

Noel is much better than Carol! In fact, I became an Anglophile in 1994 (after seeing pictures of the Choir of King's College, Cambridge and hearing an English choir on public radio), all because of English hymn tunes and the excellence of the English choral tradition and Gothic and Tudor architecture.
