The Tea
Choklate Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Turn it up, C'mon

Yeah

I can't fit inside that box that you put me in (no more)
I've outgrown it don't feel good against my skin
I think I'm in love with the lyrics all over again
They fit like a fresh fit of the rack, we so fierce

Honey
Take what it is you may need from me
But let me keep my right to do it my way
Livin' how I like (I like)
Can I reserve my eyes to see it how I might

You try that
Now give it back
Cause this is the tea for me
Calling just let us be free

You try that
Now give it back
Cause this is the tea for me
Calling just let us be free

My you don't fit inside the lines you've colored in
Frequently found my Crayola outside of them

I think I'm in love with my bass line all over again (yeah)
Fits like a fresh pair of dunks homey, yes we fierce

Honey
Take what it is you may need from me
But let me keep my right to do it my way
Livin' how I like (I like)
Can I reserve my eyes to see it how I might

You try that
Now give it back
Cause this is the tea for me
Calling just let us be free

You try that
Now give it back
Cause this is the tea for me
Calling just let us be free

They think they know better 'bout what’s good for me, please
Sweep your own porch before you come preaching to me

See nobody really knows it all
And most those in front of all, should sit down and learn from y'all...
The lessons lie inside of the walls who still yearn to be taught
Let’s get on the ball

You try that
Now give it back
Cause this is the tea for me
Calling just let us be free

You try that
Now give it back

Cause this is the tea for me
Calling just let us be free

Overall Meaning

In this song, Choklate is expressing that she cannot be confined to the limitations that others may try to impose on her. She has outgrown the box they have put her in and feels uncomfortable staying in it. Choklate’s love for music has allowed her to break free from the barriers that she has faced. She reignites her passion for music in the lyrics making her feel strong and powerful. She has found a new sense of freedom by living her life on her terms, and she wishes to keep it that way. Choklate believes that everyone should have the freedom to do things their way without any restraints.

Choklate urges the listeners to take what they need from her, but she requests to be allowed to live her life on her terms. Her words make it clear that she wants to see things her way without any limitations. She wants to keep her right to have her own perspective, her own opinion and her own way of living. Choklate believes in learning and growing in life continually, and she thinks that nobody knows everything. She also believes that people who act like they know everything, need to learn from those who are in the trenches living life, learning the lessons they have to teach. The song ‘The Tea’ thus encourages us to be open-minded and to appreciate and accept differences in life.

"THE DEFINITION OF  NEO-SOUL"
Neo-Soul is a timeless musical genre that fuses real instrumental, Jazz, contemporary R&B and 1970s-style soul, funk, and rock with some elements of hip-hop. As it's name (new soul) implies, Neo-Soul music is essentially modern-day soul music, with contemporary attitudes and sensibilities. It differs from contemporary R&B in that it's organic and obviously more soulful, and it also tends to have deeper messages and meanings than R&B.
