Chris Brown
Big Boi
Yeah
Hook, line and sinker, I knew she was mine the day I seen her
Got a big mouth bass on the line, it's time for me to retrieve her
And go get her like a wide receiver, but we don't play no ball
On the real we need to nip this in the bud
'Cause we kept it real with everyone
So tell me why they hatin' (everybody's hatin')
It feels like they're just waitin' (for us to grow apart)
It's just hard for me to do (ooh, ooh)
But baby if I'm your man, I guess I gotta be your man
These men just gotta understand
Little girl, with curves and hips, luscious lips
Girl I can't front now
I'm nervous
I'm like hold up
Wait, wait a minute
I'm genuine with it
I ain't tryna' put no pimpin' in it
I'm like hold up
Can I talk to her (hold up)
Can I take her out (hold up, uh)
That's why I gotta tell you
Nowadays it's so crazy out here
You'd wanna cut and leave
If your daughter struts with me, lucky me
And you'd be lucky too, no entourage, no crew
Just me riding with my boo, I got her
But don't think I'm replacing you
Girl I know you know what I do and I'm a major minor
It'll take days and days and decades to find another
Dude, that's gon' walk in my shoes
And girl keep it one with you as long if you do the usual
And I'm talking 'bout hold up, wait, wait a minute
I'm genuine with it, I ain't tryna put no pimping in it
And I'm like hold up
Can I talk to her? (Hold up)
Can I take her out?
Hold up, uh, that's why I gotta tell you now
Baby please, hang up the phone 'cause I'm talking to your father
Mr Jones, Mr Jones, I've been talking to your daughter
And she like me, she told me she like me
And I really like her, she gon' be my wifey
Baby, please, hang up the phone 'cause I'm talking to your father
Mr. Jones, Mr. Jones, I've been talking to your daughter
And she like me, he told me she like me
And I really like her, she gon' be my wifey
And I'm like hold up, wait, wait a minute
I'm genuine with it, I ain't tryna put no pimping in it
And I'm like hold up, hold up, hold up (hold up)
That's why I gotta tell you now
Now is the time for me to come clean
Now is the time for us to turn that yellow light to green light
And proceed us together, be more better like lemon pepper on your wings
And you'll never find another fella that's better than your king
Know what I mean, know what I'm saying,
Know what I'm talking about, girl, who playin'
But we cant have no picket fence 'cause we got acres and acres of land
The haters are takin' it mad
That we can handle these fakers for class
Mannerisms on that C.O. Five and a half on they ass
Girl buy, give it a try, give yo boy a chance
Ever since you landed in Myspace it seems like I'm yours again
My top friend, drop them, we don't need no audience popping
For approval or applause, not them
I'm like hold up, wait, wait a minute
I'm genuine with it, I ain't tryna put no pimping in it
And I'm like hold up
Can I talk to her? (Hold up)
Can I take her out? (Hold up)
Uh, that's why I gotta tell you now
And I'm like hold up, wait, wait a minute
I'm genuine with it, I ain't tryna put no pimping in it
And I'm like hold up
Can I talk to her? (Hold up)
Can I take her out? (Hold up)
Uh, that's why I gotta tell you now
Baby, please
And she like me and I really like her
Baby, please
She gon' be my wifey, baby, please
The song “Hold Up” by Chris Brown starts off with a conversation between Brown, Big Boi and the listeners, with a catchy beat that sounds like elevator music. Brown raps about how he knew this girl was his from the moment he saw her and compares her to a big mouth bass, explaining how he can’t let her get away. He talks about how he wants to be her man and that he doesn't want anyone to come between them. Brown expresses how he is nervous around her and wants to take her out on a date. He knows society can be judgmental and that people may not approve of their relationship, but he doesn't want that to stop him from being with the girl he loves. He then asks for her father's permission to be with her and promises to treat her right.
The lyrics in "Hold Up" are about a man who is serious about a woman he cares about and wants to take his relationship to the next level. Brown's words emphasize the importance of being honest and upfront about one’s feelings and intentions. He shows respect by asking for her father's permission to be with her and assures the girl that he will always do right by her. Through the lyrics, Brown conveys the message that being genuine is essential when it comes to love, as we can not fake anything when it comes to love. Brown's message is one that many can relate to and serves as a reminder that love is meant to be shared with the one you truly care about.
