A House Is Not a Home
Chris Colfer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
I should be happy
But all I do is cry

(Cry, cry, no more laughter)
Oh, I should be happy
(Oh, why did she go)
I only know that since he left my life's so empty

Though I try to forget it just can't be done
Each time the doorbell rings I still run
I don't know how in the world
To stop thinking of him
(I should be happy)
'Cause I still love him so
I end each day the way I start out
Crying my heart out

One less bell to answer
One less egg to fry
One less man to pick up after
No more laughter
No more love
Since he went away (Since he went away)
Since he went away

Ooh, A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no one sitting there
Well, I'm not meant to live alone
Turn this house into a home
When I climb the stair and turn the key
Oh, please be there
Still in love with me

(One less bell to answer)
Each time the doorbell rings, I still run
(One less egg to fry)
One less man (one less man) to pick up after
No more laughter, no more love
Since he went away (Since he went away)

Since he went away
All I do is cry.

Overall Meaning

The song A House Is Not A Home performed by the cast of Glee, particularly Chris Colfer and the late Cory Monteith, tells the story of a person who has just experienced a breakup. They are left feeling empty and struggling to adjust to their new life without their partner. Though they should feel happy about their newfound freedom, all they can do is cry. The song describes how difficult it is to move on, and how the person is still very much in love with their ex-partner despite their absence.

The lyrics “One less bell to answer, one less egg to fry, one less man to pick up after” paints a vivid picture of the tasks this person used to do for their partner. Although they are free of these responsibilities, they are left feeling hollow and sad. The line “A chair is still a chair, even when there's no one sitting there” emphasizes the emptiness that the person feels, symbolizing the emptiness they face without their partner. The song ends on a melancholic note, with the singer still crying, unable to forget their ex.

A chair is still a chair, even when there's no one sittin' there
But a chair is not a house and a house is not a home
When there's no one there to hold you tight
And no one there you can kiss goodnight

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Girl

A room is a still a room, even when there's nothin' there but gloom
But a room is not a house and a house is not a home
When the two of us are far apart
And one of us has a broken heart

Now and then I call your name
And suddenly your face appears
But it's just a crazy game
When it ends, it ends in tears

Pretty little darling, have a heart, don't let one mistake keep us apart
I'm not…

Definitely an underrated Kurt performance!

@spicyguacamole237

Kurt's voice is so beautiful in this song. This is one of my favorite Kurt performances.

@SymphonyBrahms

This is so emotional. Kurt is crying at the end of the song. And Mr. Schue is about to cry. It's one of the best songs that Chris sang on the show. Does he sing at all anymore? Or is he now a full time author?

@heitong8547

SymphonyBrahms
I think he's now an author
He's making movies (of his books) though

@nemo227

This, a single song, showed all of us that Colfer was an exceptional talent.

@marilynb9955

I love Chris's version of this. It's one of the best. The best one I ever heard was by JoAnne Jackson, a black singer in Des Moines at Ernie's Urban Lounge in the early 70s. When she sang this you could hear a pin drop, no one made a sound. She had one of the best voices I ever heard and she could sing anything. The last I heard she was doing clubs in Vegas.

@koivukoivu3654

he mentioned on twitter in dec 2018 recoeding a voice and seven original songs for an animated movie, But in this one interview he said “I don’t sing unless I have to. Or in the shower. Honestly, singing is my biggest fear. I never participate in group singing activity.” so i don't think we can get our hopes too high up :(

@felixasmodeus3658

I always remember he did this cover... beautifully sadness... sorrow and I listen to it when I have some family issues

The song fit Chris Colfer's voice like a glove, but it sounded like the key was too high for Cory Monteith, unfortunately. Beautifully performed, and it fit the storyline perfectly.

@leekoenig2160

Agreed this was a little out Cory’s range at the time. Still he managed to sing it in tune. Being outside of his comfort zone vocally helped expose the raw emotion he was portraying. I wouldn’t change a thing here 😀.
