Work
Chris Connor Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lives a life that isn't necessarily sunny
Likewise the man who works for fame
There's no guarantee that time won't erase his name
The fact is, the only work that really brings enjoyment
Is the kind that is for girl and boy meant
Fall in love and you won't regret it
Holding hands at midnight
'Neath a starry sky
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try
Strolling with the one girl
Sighing sigh after sigh
Nice work if you can get it
And you can get it if you try
Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?
Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow
It's nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won't you tell me how?"
Just imagine someone
Waiting at the cottage door
Where two hearts become one
Who could ask for anything more?
Loving one who loves you
And then taking that vow
Nice work if you can get it
And if you get it, won't you tell me how?"
In Chris Connor's song "Nice Work If You Can Get It," the lyrics describe the different ways people pursue happiness and fulfillment in their lives. The opening lines suggest that those who live solely for money may not lead happy lives, and neither will those who work for fame since their achievements may eventually be forgotten. The song suggests that the only work that brings true enjoyment is the work of love, the kind that is meant for romantic relationships. Falling in love and holding hands at midnight under the stars is the best work of all if one can attain it.
The song then goes on to paint a picture of the joy and simplicity of romantic love. Strolling with a loved one and sighing in happiness is described as "nice work," but only if one can attain it. The song emphasizes that true happiness comes from finding someone who loves you back and making a lifelong commitment to each other. The final line is a plea for someone to share their love and happiness, asking "if you get it, won't you tell me how?"
Chris Connor's "Nice Work If You Can Get It" is a celebration of love and the joy that comes from building a life with someone you love. It encourages listeners to pursue true happiness rather than chasing after money or fame.
