DEEP INSIDE
Chris Jasper Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
For many years
I've lived my life
Publicly
So it's hard for me to find a man I trust
I really trust
And everytime I find someone I like
Gotta worry about
That they see
And I thought you were the one, yeah
Deep inside I wish that they could see
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
Deep inside I wish that they could see
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
I don't have a lot of friends
And sometimes I have to wonder
Is it cash they see when they look at me
'Cause they're lookin' for a ride that's free
So I made the choice to be
Good to those who are good to me
Don't judge me, don't think I'm bitter
For the evil does allow me to see I'm just Mary
I'm just Mary, just Mary, just Mary
I'm just Mary, just Mary, just Mary
I, I, oh
Deep inside I wish that they could see
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
Deep inside I wish that they could see
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
The problem is
For many years
I've lived my life
Publicly
And everytime I find a man
I, I can't trust him
Oh
The lyrics of "Deep Inside" by Chris Jasper are about the struggles of living life in the public eye and constantly being judged and scrutinized. The singer, who is presumed to be Chris Jasper himself, is expressing the pain of not being able to trust people and the difficulty of finding genuine connections. He speaks about the challenge of meeting someone he likes while being uncertain whether they truly see him for who he is, rather than just what they know from his public persona.
Throughout the song, the singer also touches on the issue of friends who may only be around him for his wealth and fame. He has to be selective about who he allows into his life, and even then, he is left wondering about people's true intentions. Essentially, the song is a cry for understanding and for others to see him simply as a human being, rather than a public figure with a certain image to maintain.
In all, "Deep Inside" is a heartfelt and honest plea from someone who has lived much of their life in the public eye. It speaks to the struggles of feeling misunderstood and alone, despite being constantly surrounded by people.

The issue is
For many years
For a long time
I've lived my life
I've existed
Publicly
In the public eye
So it's hard for me to find a man I trust
It's challenging for me to find a trustworthy partner
I really trust
That I can truly rely on
And everytime I find someone I like
Each time I encounter someone I am interested in
Gotta worry about
Concerned about
If it's really me
Whether they accept me for who I am
That they see
The real me
And I thought you were the one, yeah
I believed you were the answer
Deep inside I wish that they could see
I truly desire for them to understand
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
That I am a regular person with nothing special
I don't have a lot of friends
I don't have many companions
And sometimes I have to wonder
On occasion, I contemplate
Is it cash they see when they look at me
Are they solely fixated on my wealth?
'Cause they're lookin' for a ride that's free
Simply looking for a free ride
So I made the choice to be
I decided to become
Good to those who are good to me
Treating those who have my back well
Don't judge me, don't think I'm bitter
Do not criticize me, don't assume I am resentful
For the evil does allow me to see I'm just Mary
For through the negativity, I can perceive that I am just an ordinary person
I'm just Mary, just Mary, just Mary
Simply, only Mary
I, I, oh
A sound, probably an ad lib
And everytime I find a man
Whenever I meet a potential partner
I, I can't trust him
I struggle to have confidence in him
Deep inside I wish that they could see
I genuinely desire for them to comprehend
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
That I am just an average person
Deep inside I wish that they could see
Deep inside, I long for them to perceive
That I'm just plain ol' Mary, Mary
That I am simply Mary, a regular human being
