Chris Kenner Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something you got, baby
Makes me work all day
Something you got, baby
Makes me bring home my pay
Something you got, baby
You ought to know
My my, whoa whoa
I love you so

Something you got, baby
Makes the world go 'round
Something you got, baby
Keep me home every night
Something you got, baby
You ought to know
You ought to know
Whoa, whoa, my, my
Whoa I love you so

Something you got
Makes me work all day
Something you got
Makes me bring home my pay
Something you got
You ought to know

My my, whoa whoa
I love you so

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Chris Kenner's song "Something You Got" are about the power of love and how it can completely consume and control a person's actions and emotions. The repeated phrase "Something you got, baby" refers to the indescribable feeling that the singer's lover gives them, something that is so powerful that it makes them work all day and brings home their pay. The singer is deeply in love and acknowledges that the person they are with has something special that cannot be explained, but is nonetheless irresistible to them.

The song continues to talk about how this love keeps the singer at home every night and how it makes the world go 'round. The repetition of lyrics throughout the song puts emphasis on the overwhelming feeling of love that the singer experiences. The line "You ought to know" is also repeated multiple times, perhaps as a plea to the lover to acknowledge the power they hold over the singer.

I was born and raised in New Orleans and always loved Chris Kenner music. I knew he was local, but didn't know he was from Kenner. The bio says he was born in 1929, so he was older than my mother by 7 years. Chris Kenner was a big star back in the day. He did "LAND OF A THOUSAND DANCES", and a host of others. Of course I was too young to see him on tour, but the radio stations played his music all the time. The Cresent City musicians were so close..Irma Thomas, Professor Longhair, Allen Toussaint, Fats Domino, Johnny Adams, Jessie Hill, Lloyd Price, Ernie K Doe and a host of others defined the New Orleans Soul Sound. I loved growing up there, and now at 70 years old, I MISS the spirit, feel and sounds of the city. It was a fantastic place to grow up in.
When I go back now it just doesn't feel the same. All my older relatives have passed on, but my younger cousins are still there. Great job, Chris! Rest In Peace.

Covered by both the Moody Blues (on their 1st album) and Them (on their 2nd). I put both and this original in my "Magnificent Moodies" playlist. Thanks for the upload!
