The first is Chris Martin, lead singer of the band Coldplay.
While studying at University College London, Martin met Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman. In 1997, they formed the rock band Coldplay. The band has had internationally recognized fame and success since their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000. Since then, they have released four further albums: A Rush of Blood to the Head, X&Y, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and Mylo Xyloto.
As a solo artist, Martin has written songs for a variety of acts including Embrace ("Gravity") and Jamelia ("See It in a Boy's Eyes"). Martin has also collaborated with Ron Sexsmith, Faultline, The Streets, and Ian McCulloch. He also sang a part of the vocals for the Band Aid 20 single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" at the end of 2004. In 2005, Martin collaborated with Nelly Furtado on the track "All Good Things (Come to an End)", for her 2006 album, Loose. The two were once rumoured to be a couple, after they both performed at Glastonbury in 2002. Furtado joked about the situation, saying that "Yeah, he's my boyfriend β he just doesn't know it yet".
Martin's fascination with hip hop was shown in the summer of 2006 when he collaborated with rapper Jay-Z for the rapper's comeback album Kingdom Come after the two met earlier in the year. Martin put some chords together for a song known as "Beach Chair" and sent them to Jay-Z who enlisted the help of hip hop producer Dr. Dre to add the drum line to complete the track. The song was performed on 27 September 2006 by the two during Jay-Z's European tour at Royal Albert Hall. In 2007, Martin appeared on a track titled "Part of the Plan" for Swizz Beatz' debut solo album One Man Band Man. Martin has also worked on a solo collaboration with Kanye West, with whom he shared an imprompt jam session during a 2006 concert at Abbey Road Studios. Queen Of The Jungle
Chris Martin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But what about the lioness his mate
While he is sleeping through the night
She is hunting with no light
And brings him home his breakfast on a plate
No need for her to wear a crown
Or it might only slow her down
Long live the queen of the jungle
Long live the queen of the jungle
Without her there could never be a king
For every little king to be
Starts out in a family
And from his mama learns important things
So if you're tired of being small
And if you plan to grow it all
You listen to the queen of the jungle
Never hit a bigger cat
Never call a rhino fat
The less you say the more you have to eat
Don't forget to wash your face
And keep your paws in your own space
And watch for thorns that might get in you feet
While the king is surely big and strong and handsome (roar!)
But what about his quick and agile bride
While he naps the day away
She tends the cubs and helps them play
You have to wonder where's his sense of pride
While he is shiny teeth and thrown
She takes care of things back home
Long live the queen of the jungle
Long live the queen
Jungle queen
(You go girls!)
(That's right!)
In this song, Chris Martin praises the female lion, also known as the lioness, who is the real backbone of the jungle. She might not have the title of "king," but without her, there could never be a king. While the male lion is sleeping through the night, she is out hunting with no light, and brings him breakfast on a plate. She doesn't need to wear a crown; it might only slow her down. Chris Martin exclaims, βlong live the queen of the jungleβ because the lioness is the true queen who runs the show.
The second verse of the song focuses on family dynamics, and how important it is to respect and learn from the queen of the jungle. Chris Martin suggests that the "little king" starts from a family, and from his mama learns important things. In order to grow, you must listen to the queen of the jungle. The song also shares some advice from the queen, such as never hitting a bigger cat, never calling a rhino fat, and to keep your paws in your own space.
Overall, the song celebrates the female identity and portrays that the queen of the jungle is the unseen heroine of the jungle, who deserves recognition and respect, and is more than just a "mate" to the lion. It is a powerful message of acknowledging the roles of females in leadership positions and their unacknowledged roles in society.
