The first is Chris Martin, lead singer of the band Coldplay.
While studying at University College London, Martin met Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman. In 1997, they formed the rock band Coldplay. The band has had internationally recognized fame and success since their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000. Since then, they have released four further albums: A Rush of Blood to the Head, X&Y, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends and Mylo Xyloto.
As a solo artist, Martin has written songs for a variety of acts including Embrace ("Gravity") and Jamelia ("See It in a Boy's Eyes"). Martin has also collaborated with Ron Sexsmith, Faultline, The Streets, and Ian McCulloch. He also sang a part of the vocals for the Band Aid 20 single, "Do They Know It's Christmas?" at the end of 2004. In 2005, Martin collaborated with Nelly Furtado on the track "All Good Things (Come to an End)", for her 2006 album, Loose. The two were once rumoured to be a couple, after they both performed at Glastonbury in 2002. Furtado joked about the situation, saying that "Yeah, he's my boyfriend — he just doesn't know it yet".
Martin's fascination with hip hop was shown in the summer of 2006 when he collaborated with rapper Jay-Z for the rapper's comeback album Kingdom Come after the two met earlier in the year. Martin put some chords together for a song known as "Beach Chair" and sent them to Jay-Z who enlisted the help of hip hop producer Dr. Dre to add the drum line to complete the track. The song was performed on 27 September 2006 by the two during Jay-Z's European tour at Royal Albert Hall. In 2007, Martin appeared on a track titled "Part of the Plan" for Swizz Beatz' debut solo album One Man Band Man. Martin has also worked on a solo collaboration with Kanye West, with whom he shared an imprompt jam session during a 2006 concert at Abbey Road Studios. He performed the chorus on "Homecoming", the fifth single from West's third album, Graduation.

Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets that I used to own
I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing:
Long live the king!"
One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never, never an honest word
That was when I ruled the world
(Ohhh)
It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become
Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
(Ohhhhh Ohhh Ohhh)
I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field
For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter will call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world
Oooooh Oooooh Oooooh
Chris Martin's Viva La Vida is a song about power, loss, and redemption. The song is narrated from the perspective of a former king who once had the power to control the world but is now left alone to sweep the streets that he used to own. The opening lines "I used to rule the world, Seas would rise when I gave the word, Now in the morning I sleep alone, Sweep the streets that I used to own" immediately establish the theme of power loss.
The song delves deeper into the idea of the fickleness of power and the fall from grace. The lyrics "Once you go there was never, never an honest word, That was when I ruled the world" reveal that the king has realized that his power was built on a foundation of lies and deception. The chorus "I hear Jerusalem bells are ringing, Roman Cavalry choirs are singing, Be my mirror my sword and shield, My missionaries in a foreign field, For some reason I can't explain, I know Saint Peter will call my name" signifies the king's confession and his search for redemption.
The lyrics "Never an honest word, But that was when I ruled the world" reveal that the king is aware of his past mistakes but is eager to make amends. Overall, Viva La Vida is a poignant song about the dangers of absolute power and the importance of self-reflection and truth.

Listen as the crowd would sing:
Even the people who praised me did so only because they were obligated to

One minute I held the key
I briefly had the power to unlock any door

And I discovered that my castles stand
My power and wealth were built on a weak foundation
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand
And were therefore not sustainable

Blew down the doors to let me in
Has now come back to haunt me and has brought me to my knees
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
The destruction caused by my ambition
People couldn't believe what I'd become
The extent of my corruption was shocking to those who once looked up to me

Oh who would ever want to be king?
But despite everything, there are still those who seek power at any cost
