Young and Foolish
Chris McNulty Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Why is it wrong to be
Young and foolish
We haven't long to be
Soon enough the carefree days
The sunlit days go by
Soon enough the bluebird has to fly
We were foolish
One day we fell in love
Now we wonder
What were we dreaming of
Smiling in the sunlight
Laughing in the rain
I wish that we were
Young and foolish again
Smiling in the sunlight
Laughing in the rain
I wish that we were
Young and foolish again
The lyrics of Chris McNulty's "Young and Foolish" reflect on the fleeting nature of youth and the nostalgia felt for carefree days gone by. The song begins with the lyrics, "Young and foolish, why is it wrong to be? We haven't long to be." The singer questions why it is frowned upon to be young and foolish, as youth is a temporary state that passes by quickly. The next verse continues with the idea that "soon enough the carefree days, the sunlit days go by." This highlights the sad reality that youth fades away, and with it the sense of freedom and joy that comes with it.
The bridge of the song speaks to the experience of falling in love when young and foolish, singing, "We were foolish, one day we fell in love. Now we wonder, what were we dreaming of." The singer portrays the fleeting nature of youthful love, which often feels powerful, but in hindsight may seem naive. The final verses of the song end with a wish to return to the happy moments of youth, singing "smiling in the sunlight, laughing in the rain, I wish that we were young and foolish again." The song culminates with a sense of longing for the lost days of youth and the memories that come with it.
