Grey
Chris Pureka Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It was a saffron day on the avenue
I took the evening train back to my dark room
And the periwinkle sky was just the night in disguise
Oh and everything eventually turns grey

Well if you saw me now, I'd still talk at my shoes
And if I saw you now, your eyes would still be blue
And believing your own lies seemed like such a good idea
But you see your father's eyes when you look into the mirror
Oh and everything eventually turns grey

It takes one hour to burn
What was twenty years to come
And we're all rubble at the bottom
And it's all falling down
Yeah it's all falling down

The creases there, and my crooked spine
The bold headlines now, a linear design
Oh and everything eventually turns grey

It takes one hour to burn
What was two hundred years to come
And we're all rubbled at the bottom
And it's all falling down
And it's all falling down
Yeah it's all falling down

Now, now it's getting yellow at the edges
Cracking at the corners
Bending at the knees
You're getting blue in the face
From screaming the warning
And no one's listening
It's hard to see, we turn away
We're slowly walking underground
Ashes to ashes now, ashes to ashes now
Now your old idyllic hope is just
A shipwreck on the shore

And now your old idyllic hope is just
A shipwreck on the shore

Overall Meaning

Chris Pureka’s “Grey” seems to be a commentary on the transience of life and the inevitability of entropy. The opening lines set the scene on an autumn day on a street where there’s a feeling of changing times. The singer catches a train back to their dark room, which suggests they are feeling melancholic, and they see the sky as the night in disguise – foreshadowing the idea that everything will eventually turn grey.

The second verse talks of the changes in people, yet also the things that remain the same. If the singer saw someone they haven't seen in a while, they might notice physical changes such as greying hair but also note that certain characteristics remain constant: their eyes are still the same colour. They seem to reflect on the idea of lying to oneself as well, something seen as a means of trying to create a new identity, but instead the singer sees only their father’s eyes reflected back in their own. This also reinforces the idea that who we are is shaped by our past, and we can’t always escape it.

The chorus emphasizes that things don’t last forever and time is fleeting. The first verse refers to the loss of colour and vibrancy over time, and through memories and nostalgia, things can become grey. The following two verses build on this idea, with references to burning and rubble, alluding to destruction and the fact that nothing lasts forever. The final lines draw a picture of decay and destruction, with the once idyllic and hopeful dreams of the past now destroyed.

Every time I hear her sing, I'm drawn into every emotion I'm capable of experiencing, but mostly just pure awe~ that one human being can capture so much in one song. To say she's talented, gifted, sounds so trite. She's so much more, she IS a gift, & I think this song especially showcases her beautiful voice, along with her (always) magical melody & lyrics. She's my "drug of choice" &  I'm completely & utterly addicted.

Cause there's no hips and pounding beats with low scratchy voice rap about how ones gonna beat the one and all that sucka stuff. This brand of music, laid back folk rock, has a following of real class in itself, us who follow it.
