Dance!
Chris Rea Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
What's that stuff going on
Yeah I screamed at mama
Where did that feeling come from
She said son I don't know what it is
But I know that's where you belong
Mama looked at me,
She smiled me a sunny day
Took all my fear away
She said son now I know for sure
What you gonna do one day
It's a slow dance,
Dance of the rhythm and blues
It's a slow dance,
Dance of the rhythm and blues
Now I screamed at mama,
Mama tell me where did you go
Yeah I screamed for my mama,
Mama tells me what you come to know
I was born with this feeling
And it ain't going to let me go
It's a slow dance,
Dance of the rhythm and blues
It's a slow dance,
Dance of the rhythm and blues
The lyrics of Dance! by Chris Rea describe a young man's desperate yearning to understand his own emotions and find his place in the world through the medium of slow dancing to rhythm and blues music. He confronts his mother, screaming in anguish and confusion, demanding to know what's going on with him and where he came from. The mother does not have a direct answer but instead offers her support, assuring him that he belongs somewhere, at that moment lifting his spirits with her warm smile. Through this interaction, the singer comes to the realization that the only way to satisfy this burning desire inside of him is to embrace the slow dance of rhythm and blues.
The lyrics suggest that the slow dance represents a physical manifestation of the emotional turbulence and longing the singer experiences. He was born with this feeling that won't let him go and by slow dancing to the rhythm and blues, he hopes to gain some control over it. He embraces the slow dance as a means of expressing his emotions, finding catharsis through movement, and requiring no words to express himself fully. Ultimately, it leaves him in a state of peaceful acceptance, embracing his identity and the realization that the rhythm and blues is where he belongs.

She said son I don't know what it is

When you sing of the joy only love can bring
Heaven knows, it’s in my heart and my soul
We’re caught in a world full of tears
So many sad times and fears
So while there’s a chance and you’re near
Well, let’s dance 🕺
Yeah, yeah, let’s dance 🕺
Ah, yeah
There’s a world far away the one we see
There’s a dream I will never let go
One thing is certainly true
This moments for me and for you
While there’s not a thing that we can do

Wonder how many people only found this epic thanks to the story of the egg in the bath?
@tryarunm
I remember this from 30 years ago. Everybody was still alive then, my mother, cousin Rohini.
@matthewbohne7238
First time I heard this was during the closing credits of "Madhouse" with John Larroquette and Kirstie Alley. My dad rewound the VCR after the movie and listened to it six times. I've found it and listened to it over the last 30 years many many times. I'm amazed it didn't take off on the radio anywhere near Ohio. (Actually, I'm not surprised... it's Ohio.)
Still a timeless song.
@RamAirBandit
Every time I hear this song makes me want to dance. Thank you, Chris.
@Divocwax
Who says he is underrated? He has a list of hits which stay relevant across decades.
@RamAirBandit
Most likely what he’s trying to say is he’s never tour the US
@fmmaj9noname332
I'm pretty versed in music, especially from the 1960s through the 1980s, and the only song I ever heard of his was Fool If You Think It's Over, and I never knew who did it. He's almost unknown in the US, despite having albums that went Platinum x6 in the UK. Terribly unknown genius, we in the US have been robbed of listening to his music until YouTube came along!
@peterbainton1032
CHRIS IS THE ULTIMATE GENIUS, I was brought up in council flats and state Ed. Every word and sentiment means so much to me. Keep rocking Chris. 😘👍
