Stainsby Girls
Chris Rea Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some girls used to kiss and run
Never knew what they had done
Some girls always wasted time
Keep you hanging on the line
Some loved horses and always stayed at home
But the Stainsby girls loved the Rolling Stones

Now some had games that you had to play
Making rules along the way
Strange attractions newly found
Pride and passion kicked around
Some girls stole your heart
Like most girls do
But a Stainsby girls could break it in two

And I fell in love, I fell in love
I fell in love with a Stainsby girl

Deepest water Stainsby blue
Names and faces fade away
Memories here to stay

And I fell in love, I fell in love
I fell in love with a Stainsby girl

Overall Meaning

The song "Stainsby Girls" by Chris Rea is about the different types of girls the singer has encountered in his life and how the Stainsby Girls stood out to him. He contrasts the girls who played games and wasted time with those who knew what they wanted, such as the Stainsby Girls who loved the Rolling Stones. The singer also describes how some girls could steal his heart, but a Stainsby girl could break it in two. Despite the pain they may have caused, he admits falling in love with a Stainsby girl.

The lyrics suggest that the Stainsby Girls are different from other girls in their town or perhaps even in society. They are not afraid to pursue what they love and have a strong passion for music, particularly the Rolling Stones. The singer implies there is a depth to their personalities and an unpredictability that makes them stand out. However, loving a Stainsby girl comes with its own set of challenges, as they have the power to break a person's heart.

Overall, the song explores the different types of girls the singer has met, but highlights the unique characteristics of the Stainsby Girls that have captured his heart, despite the risks that come with falling in love with them.

A real musician playing real instruments. Pure joy. Not about himself trying to put a message out about himself, just great music put out there to enjoy. Yes, maybe a comment, but about life, not some egocentric such as Sam Smith or Billie Eilish or whatever they are.

It's about the girls from Stainsby School. The video shows you them dressing up and going to a nightclub. Chris said in an interview that the Stainsby Girls always went out with older boys who took them to nightclubs. He said he and his school mates were in love with them but the girls just thought they were immature schoolkids. How times change. Now they all act like immature schookids even into their thirties lol.
