Maggie's Song
Chris Stapleton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me tell you a story
About an old friend of mine
Somebody left her in a shopping cart
In a parking lot for us to find
Just a fuzzy black pup
She was hungry and feeling alone
We put her in the back seat
Told her we were taking her home

Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

A few kids later
We moved out on the farm
And she followed those kids around
Yeah, she kept them safe from harm
And she loved to chase squirrels
And playing out in the snow
She'd take off like a bullet
Man, you should have seen her go

Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

It was raining on a Monday
The day that Maggie died
She woke up and couldn't use her legs
So I laid down by her side
She put her head on my hand
Like she'd done so many times
I told her she was a good dog
Then I told her goodbye

Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

I had a revelation
As the tractor dug a hole
I can tell you right now
That a dog has a soul
And I thought to myself
As we buried her on the hill
I never knew me a better dog
And I guess I never will

Run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child
Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild
Oh, run, Maggie run
With the heart of a rebel child

Oh, run, Maggie run
Be just as free as you are wild

Overall Meaning

In Chris Stapleton's song "Maggie's Song," he shares a heartwarming story about an old friend, his dog Maggie. The lyrics narrate how he and his wife found Maggie in a shopping cart left alone in a parking lot, hungry and alone, and decided to take her home. They moved out of the city, bought a farm, and Maggie loved to follow their kids around, playing with them, and keeping them safe from harm.

The song takes a bittersweet turn when Maggie, who had grown old, woke up one rainy day and couldn't use her legs. As Stapleton lays down next to her, she puts her head on his hand, and he says his goodbyes. The lyrics are emotionally charged and vivid, bringing a heartfelt insight into the way we love and let go of our pets.

The song delivers a message about remembering our pets, even after they are gone. It conveys how dogs are more than animals and that they have souls, just like humans. I'm 75 years old and cry like a baby every time I hear this song. I've had, loved and lost far too many dogs and they were all wonderful loving friends and companions. All were better than most of the humans I have known. I'm looking forward to being with all of them some time in the distant future.
Question: When you die, how do you know if you are in Heaven?
Answer: You know you are in Heaven when you see all of your former pets running to greet you and love you again.
