Starting Over
Chris Stapleton Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well the road rolls out like a welcome mat
To a better place than the one we're at
And I ain't got no kinda plan
But I've had all of this town I can stand
And I got friends out on the coast
We can jump in the water and see what floats
We've been saving for a rainy day
Let's beat the storm and be on our way

And it don't matter to me
Wherever we are is where I wanna be
And honey, for once in our life
Let's take our chances and roll the dice
And I can be your lucky penny
You can be my four leaf clover
Starting over

This might not be an easy time
There's rivers to cross and hills to climb
And some days we might fall apart
And some nights might feel cold and dark
But nobody wins afraid of losing
And the hard roads are the ones worth choosing
Some day we'll look back and smile
And know it was worth every mile

And it don't matter to me
Wherever we are is where I wanna be
And honey, for once in our life
Let's take our chances and roll the dice
And I can be your lucky penny
You can be my four leaf clover
Starting over
Starting over

And it don't matter to me
Wherever we are is where I wanna be
And honey, for once in our life
Let's take our chances and roll the dice
And I can be your lucky penny
You can be my four leaf clover

Overall Meaning

In Chris Stapleton's song "Starting Over", the singer is feeling dissatisfied with his current life and seeking a change. He describes the road as a "welcome mat" to a better place, and he is willing to take a chance and leave with no plan, just a desire for something different. He mentions friends on the coast and the opportunity to "see what floats" by jumping into the water. In the chorus, he expresses his contentment with being wherever his partner is, and his willingness to take chances and start anew. He compares himself to a lucky penny and his partner to a four-leaf clover, both symbols of good luck and potential for a positive future.

The lyrics acknowledge that starting over may not be easy and there will be obstacles to overcome, but the singer believes that the hard roads are the ones worth choosing. The song encourages taking risks and embracing change, even when it is scary or uncertain. The repetition of the phrase "starting over" emphasizes the importance and excitement of a fresh start, and the "ooh" at the end enhances the emotional impact of the song.

Can we all agree that we all need to start something over in our lives. Relationships. Faith. Jobs. Values. Charity. And Self. “Nobody wins afraid of losing”.

Lost my husband at the age of 25 almost 4 years ago. I was so scared on the route my life would take after. It felt like I’d be trying to find myself again for forever. I went on a first date a year ago and met the man who I get to call my husband as of last week! Chris Stapleton was being sung by a singer songwriter at the bar we were sitting at and we planned a concert trip to see Chris Stapleton that night. This song and all of his songs hold a special place in my healing heart. ❤
