Taboo
Christabelle Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the silence you'll find gold
When you feel warmth, I feel so cold
Can't get no sleep, I'm up 'til dawn
These demons have broken my goal
And I know, and I know, and I know that you see my life
In foreign eyes
And I know, and I know, and I know that you hear my cry
Tears tell no lie

Let our guards down it's time to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals
Echoes in my head, got to break the taboo
No we will never be criminals, criminals
But sticks and stones won't break my soul
Gotta be your own miracle, miracle
It's in my bones, got to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals

I know that I am not alone
Let all our thoughts and ghosts unfold
In the darkness I've found home
But what is next is still unknown
And I know, and I know, and I know that you hear my cry
Tears tell no lie

Let our guards down it's time to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals
Echoes in my head, got to break the taboo
No we will never be criminals, criminals
But sticks and stones won't break my soul
Gotta be your own miracle, miracle
It's in my bones, got to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals

(Animals, animals) break the taboo
Break the taboo (animals, animals)
Break the taboo (animals, animals)

Let our guards down it's time to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals
Echoes in my head, got to break the taboo
No we will never be criminals, criminals
But sticks and stones won't break my soul
Gotta be your own miracle, miracle

It's in my bones, got to break the taboo
Before we all become animals, animals

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Christabelle's song "Taboo" address the struggle of living with demons that have broken one's goals, leaving them feeling aimless and lost in a dark and lonely place. The opening line, "In the silence, you'll find gold," acknowledges that while it may seem like there is nothing left to hold onto in the darkness, there is still something worth searching for. The line "When you feel warmth, I feel so cold" suggests that the loneliness and sense of disconnection from others can be overwhelming. The repetition of "And I know, and I know, and I know" acknowledges the pain and suffering that is being experienced inside and the hope that someone will see and hear the pain. The chorus encourages breaking the taboo and being vulnerable with others, allowing for a deeper connection and understanding.

The second verse emphasizes the importance of breaking the taboo and speaking out about one's struggles. The line "Let all our thoughts and ghosts unfold" suggests that there is power in sharing one's innermost thoughts and feelings with others. The lyrics also highlight that while it can be scary to open up and share vulnerability with others, it is necessary for healing and growth. The final chorus reaffirms the importance of breaking the taboo and being true to oneself, reminding us that we all have the power to be our own miracles.

Overall, "Taboo" is a powerful and emotional song that encourages breaking down barriers and connecting with others in a deeper and more meaningful way.

My interpertation of the music video as a person who struggles with mental health issues:

You can see Christabelle in two "worlds"

The "world" where she is seen by "foreign eyes", where she is sold and mistreated, the world where she has to fight other people for seemingly no reason...
this "world" represent the constant struggle a person with mental health is facing every single day.

The other "world" is the place where she aspires to be, where she is finally herself and free of the control of the disease, a place where the "Taboo" is broken... yet still seems so
far out of reach that it's an illusion.. It's represented by a dance floor, a place where you can shake off all your worries and "Let your guard down"

First of all thank you for your amazing response. I appreciate every single comment! Here is a brief overview for those that may not have understood the story line of the video:

The concept behind our music video was to represent different factions of society and their own personal struggles one of which being mental illness. Their leaders are exploiting their weaknesses by forcing them to battle each other, whilst exposing them to the emperor, a representative of the society which decides to blindly judge the tribes in the video. The cheering crowd symbolises individuals who would rather choose to believe the prejudices in society, rather than forming their own opinion.

The box is a representation of the state of mind one goes through when fighting his personal battles. My role in the music video was to willingly enter the ring, on a mission to break the taboo and lead the rest of the factions to winning over their own personal struggles, without the fear of seeking help.

Christabelle That is such a good message, this is probably one of the best music videos done for a Eurovision song, and of the recent entry uploads it's the best song out of all of them too.
