The Angels
Christian Death Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Rebel my love, some day we shall overcome
But the sickness bites hard, and yes the razor's old
Of their portions, rashes, surrender, kill every first-born son
We were kneeling, dressed for burial, reaching for the name
Heard voices laughing the spirit in the plight of the living dead
Of course at the bottom of my glass made it clear what they had said
Is death a song in the tinder box
The stone has turned away
I can't remember god when I
And I'm drunk all day

Before I leave you bring the demons out
Your beauty seemed not to mind the fever
Hung on the midwife's jaw
We were kneeling, dressed for burial, reaching for the name
Heard voices laughing the spirit, and the plight of the living dead
I can't remember god when I
And I'm drunk all day
Some said I was wrong to dream that way
I was wrong to dream that way
And some made light of death and sorrow
Light of death and sorrow

But death is glory now
Death is glory now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Christian Death's song The Angels are dark and haunting, telling the story of a dystopian world plagued by sickness, death and surrender. The reference to Rubella symbolizes the disease that once ravaged the world, while the mention of the razor's old can be interpreted as a nod to the antiquated ways of treating disease. The lines "Their poisons braced in surrender, Killed every first born son" alludes to the biblical story of the ten plagues of Egypt, when God unleashed a series of punishments on Pharaoh and his people, ultimately causing the death of every first born son, until he let the Israelites go. This imagery is juxtaposed with the visual of the mourners dressed for burial, reaching for the knave, which could be a reference to the game of cards, where players attempt to "reach" a certain number.

The chorus, "Before I leave you, bring the demons on, Your beauty sleep brought to mind, A fever hung on the mid-wife's jaw" creates a sense of urgency, as if the characters in the song are preparing for an inevitable end. The lines "Some said I was wrong to dream that way, And some made light of death and sorrow, But death is glory...now", speaks to the themes of mortality and the afterlife. It suggests that despite the pain and suffering of this life, death is ultimately a release, and maybe even cause for celebration.

Overall, The Angels is a bleak and despairing song, that speaks to the anxieties of a world on the brink of collapse. It is a reminder of our mortality, and the urgency to make the most of our time here on earth.
