Change
Christina Aguilera Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was young I would look in the mirror
Didn't know it then but now it couldn't be clearer
That I remember being filled with such wonder
Before learning that the world can be harsher

Ooh, ooh
Who you love or the colour of your skin
Or the place that you were born and grew up in
Shouldn't decide how you will be treated
'Cause we're all the same when everybody's breathing

Waiting for a change to set us free
Waiting for the day when you can be you and I can be me
Waiting for hope to come around
Waiting for the day when hate is lost and love is found
Waiting for a change, waiting for a change
Change, change

For all the brave and the souls who went before us
Stand tall, then proudly lift your voices
Let 'em know who we are and our choices
And one day we won't have to sing this chorus

Waiting for a change to set us free
Waiting for the day when you can be you and I can be me
Waiting for hope to come around
Waiting for the day when hate is lost and love is found
Waiting for a change, waiting for a change
Change (oh), change (hold on)
Waiting for a change, change

When I was young I would look in the mirror
Didn't see it then but now it couldn't be clearer

Overall Meaning

"Changes" by Christina/Tight Eyez is a song that emphasizes on the importance of equality and the need for change to achieve freedom, hope and love for all races, regardless of what they look like, their skin colour or where they come from. The first verse talks about how when the singer was young, she would look in the mirror and feel wonder, without any preconceived notions of what the world expected of her. However, she later learned that the world can be harsh and cruel which can change one's view of themselves and others. The singer highlights that people should not be judged based on the colour of their skin, their country of origin or any other factor, because at the end of the day, everyone is the same and deserving of equal treatment.

In the chorus, the singer talks about the desire for change, the hope that love will conquer hate, and the day when everyone will be allowed to be themselves. The song talks about the need for a revolution where everyone can freely and comfortably embrace their identity, without being discriminated against or oppressed. The second verse is a tribute to the people who have fought for justice and equality in the past, who have paved the way for the current generation to be able to speak out and demand for what is right. The singer encourages everyone to stand tall, lift their voices and make a difference, so that one day they won't have to sing this chorus anymore.

Her voice is like a warm hug. I listen to other pop stars these days and feel weird, just disconnected and indifferent, then I listen to Christina and I just feel SO good, SO comfortable, like that "being home" kind of feeling. Don't know if that makes sense, to me it does. This song is being so overshadowed right now, deserves way more glory than it's getting.

Wow. I am not sure how I missed this song and music video since I’ve been a fan since 1999. I love her powerful voice. The loss of Christina Grimmie still hurts me. I was amazed how determined she was, posting many YouTube videos, and I was so glad she had success. Her death remains senseless. 😢
