Along The Road
Christine Dente/Margaret Becker/Susan Ashton Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Fear in the journey
Joy in the coming home
A part of the heart
Gets lost in the learning
Somewhere along the road
Along the roadYour path may wander
A pilgrim's faith may fail
Absence makes the heart grow stronger
Darkness obscures the trail
Cursing the quest
Courting disaster
Measureless nights forebode
Moments of rest
Glimpses of laughter
Are treasured along the road
Along the road
Your steps may tumble
Your thoughts may start to stray
But through it all a heart held humble
Levels and lights your way
Joy at the start
Fear in the journey
Joy in the coming home
A part of the heart
Gets lost in the learning
Somewhere along the road
Somewhere along the road
Somewhere along the road
The song "Along the Road" by Christine Dente, Margaret Becker, and Susan Ashton talks about the journey of life, with all its triumphs and challenges. The song is divided into three verses and one chorus, with each section of the song describing a different part of the journey.
The first verse describes the joy of the beginning of a journey, followed by the fear and uncertainty that comes with it. The second verse goes on to say that the journey may lead to dark times where the faith of the pilgrim may falter, but the absence only makes the heart grow stronger. The third verse talks about the moments of rest and joy that are treasured in the midst of the journey.
The chorus is a repetition of the first verse, stating that a part of the heart gets lost in the learning, somewhere along the road. This line is repeated twice, emphasizing the idea that the journey of life is filled with twists and turns, but it is all part of the learning process.
Overall, the song is about the journey of life and the lessons that are learned along the way. It teaches listeners that the journey may not always be easy, but every step has purpose and meaning.

I usually don't like remakes of my favorite songs, but this version is downright beautiful -- with stunning harmonies that do justice to Dan Fogelberg's memory. I also like the fact that they don't stray far from the original. Thanks to Ashton, Dente, Becker for keeping Dan's music alive; I'll bet he would enjoy this recording, too.

Dan Fogelberg captures the joy of being human and the joy of being a Child of God: "Along the Road".

Beautiful rendition of Dan Fogelberg’s song. My eyes are watering and I got this lump in my throat, this song is so good.

Somewhere i read that Dan considered his songs like his children and once recorded and released they were out of the nest and into the world...i belive he'd be very pleased with the way you cared for one of his kids ❤️

I bought this album in the mid 90's, when it came out, and must say I was floored at this true to the original. I know Fogelberg enjoyed hearing it. Glad he was still with us when this was done. By the way, the entire album is very good.

Saw Ashton, Becker, Dente sing this live, at an Out of the Grey concert, Still one of my favorite concerts of all time.

my31and37 Wow! Would of loved to hear that live. Saw Susan Ashton at a music festival. It was just her and someone playing an acoustic guitar. Awesome times and memories.

What a great song off of a very favorite album of mine. That album had so many great songs and I loved the whole thing.
I just heard a new ladies group called Honeyhouse that reminded me of this album and I had to go back and listen.
