Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer
Christmas Songs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Words by Robert L. May, 1947, music by Johnny Marks)

You know Dasher and prancer
And Prancer and Vixen,
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?

Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)
Had a very shiny nose
(like a light bulb)
And if you ever saw it
(saw it)
You would even say it glows
(like a flash light)
All of the other reindeer
(reindeer)
Used to laugh and call him names
(like Pinochio)
They never let poor Rudolph
(Rudolph)
Play in any reindeer games
(like Monopoly)

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say
(Ho Ho Ho)
Rudolph with your nose so bright
Won't you guide my sleigh tonight?
Then all the reindeer loved him
(loved him)
And they shouted out with glee
(yippee)
"Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
(reindeer)

You'll go down in history!"
(like Columbus)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" tell the story of Rudolph, a reindeer who is different from the rest because of his shiny and glowing nose. The other reindeer used to make fun of him and exclude him from their reindeer games. However, on one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa Claus learns about Rudolph's unique ability to guide his sleigh through the storm and asks him to lead the way. This act of bravery and usefulness earns Rudolph the acceptance and admiration of the other reindeer. The song concludes with the declaration that Rudolph will go down in history, just like Columbus.
