The First Noel
Christmas Songs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(English carol, 17th century)

The first Noel the angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds
In fields as they lay,
In fields where they,
Laying their sheep
On a cold winter's night
That was so deep.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far,
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three wise men came from country far,
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star
Wherever it went.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwest
Over Bethlehem it took its rest,
And there it did both stop and stay
Right over the place where Jesus lay.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Then did they know assuredly
Within that house the King did lie:
One entered in then for to see,
And found the Babe in poverty:
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee,
And offered there in His presence
Their gold, and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord,
That hath made heaven
And earth of naught
And with His blood
Mankind hath bought.

Noel Noel Noel Noel!
Born is the King of Israel!

Overall Meaning

The First Noel, a much-loved Christmastime hymn, tells the story of the birth of Jesus through the eyes of the shepherds who were the first to hear of it from a choir of angels. They saw a bright star in the east that signaled that a special event had taken place, and they journeyed to Bethlehem, following the star to find Jesus, the King of Israel. In the final verse, the wise men bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn king, and the song concludes with an invitation to all who hear the story to join in singing praises to God.

The song's lyrics have some historical relevance. As mentioned in the title, the song hails from the 17th century, and its origin is a mystery. In the 16th and 17th centuries, carol-singing was frowned upon by the church due to its pagan origins. Oliver Cromwell declared Christmas illegal and condemned it as a "Pagan festival." However, after the restoration in the 1660s, carol-singing was popularized again, and songs like "The First Noel" became more common. Interestingly, the song has undergone significant changes over the years, with different regions and cultures adapting the lyrics or the melody to suit their needs.

@ChristmasMusicForYou-vq8bw

Nothing beats the old classical Christmas music. Makes you feel that despite all the hard things we've been through the year somehow it's going to be alright.
