Loving Strangers
Christopher Cross Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Young and free, kicking the fences down
Somewhere hearts are breaking but he can't hear the sound
They got nothin' in common
He smiles away on the wings of a dream

He's all caught up in that world of his
She says I'm gonna miss you but I can't live like this
We got nothin' in common
So sad to say it has to be this way

Everyone on a road of their own.
Everyone gotta find a heart a home.
Loving strangers - that's you and me.
Gonna have the way to love, give a little honesty.

('Cuz they got nothing in common)

I can feel there's a hope on the wind.
The sound of your voice - I think I hear a friend.
We got nothin' in common
I know we don't, but it won't stay that way.

Everyone on a road of their own.
Everyone gotta find a heart a home.
Loving strangers - that's you and me.
Give a way to love, give a little honesty.

Everybody needs to know if there will somewhere someday be someone to call their own.
Everybody needs to hope that there will one day come a someone just in time.

Everyone on a road of their own.
Everyone gotta find a heart a home.
Loving strangers - that's you and me.
Give a way to love, give a little honesty.

'Cuz we got nothing in common. (4 times)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Christopher Cross’s song “Loving Strangers” depict a situation where two people, the singer and his lover, find themselves drifting apart, realizing they have nothing in common. He sings about feeling young and free, but also somewhat disconnected from reality. Meanwhile, his lover is heartbroken and wishes things weren’t the way they are. The chorus emphasizes the idea that everyone is on their own journey, and everyone needs to find their own heart and home. The title of the song, “Loving Strangers,” suggests that we are all strangers in some ways, trying to connect and build relationships with others.

The song seems to convey a sense of nostalgia, as the singer looks back on a past relationship that didn’t work out. He acknowledges that the two of them had differences and weren’t meant to be together, but he sees hope for the future. He believes that even though they don’t have anything in common right now, that could change. The lyrics express a desire for honesty and authenticity in relationships, which can only happen when people are true to themselves and each other.

Overall, “Loving Strangers” is a song about relationships that don’t work out, but still hold a glimmer of hope for the future. It’s a reminder that everyone is different and on their own path, but we all need love and honesty to find our way home.

This song and movie are walking proof that it’s never too late to repair an estranged relationship with a parent or family member. I made peace with my father a few years ago after years of resentment because I expected him to be the kind of father that he just can’t be, not because he doesn’t try, it’s just not in his DNA. We talk, I’m there for him, but it’s hardly an emotional and warm relationship like the one I have with my sons, I basically became the father I wished I had growing up, but we accept each other and no longer resent our faults. My sister has also accepted him. As a result, whenever he goes, we won’t have a guilty conscience and we’ll be glad we made the most of the last years of the relationship.

I too had that type of relationship, but with both of my parents. My father was an abusive alcoholic and my mother enabled him. I prayed to God that He would give me the courage and strength to forgive them both and He did. As a result, I became a better son to both of my parents later in life. Every time I talked to my Dad long distance, I told him how much I loved him and he eventually began to soften. I did the same for my mother and was with both of them when they passed away (My Dad, a WW II veteran in 2006 and my Mom in 2012).

I never married and didn't have any children because I feared I'd become just like my Dad, but I am OK with that as I realized some people should stay single and NOT become parents. I know I made the right choice and spared a wife (or several wives) and children the abusive childhood my brother and I endured.

I saw this movie when it first came out in the 1980s and the music and the story were very emotional for me at the time as I was trying to repair my relationship with my parents. Believe it or not, this movie and its soundtrack helped.

Wow! Great share. It's funny how you can open up to people online. You don't know us, and yet you shared a very intimate thought of your father.
Thanks.

Just finished watching this movie. Haven't seen it in so long. Loved it then and even more now. Tom Hanks and Jackie Gleeson were amazing in this, as well as the other cast members. The last time i watched this was when my father was alive. Now its been two years since he passed and the scene where David puts the cigar under his dad's pillow before surgery brought me to tears 😢.

Christopher Cross, still making grown men misty-eyed decades later with these excellent sappy tracks. 👍🏼

I saw Christopher Cross in Durham NC recently. I've listened to and loved his music for many years. The show was sold out. My first time seeing him live. First show of his tour. What a show!!!

@myssaaquatica9294

Last year, my brother and I heard "I love you" for the first time, and said 'goodbye' for the last time to our brilliant, self centered, funny, alcoholic Dad after a heart attack, DT's, rehab, amputation, emotional revelation and finally, peace for us all. He is with our Mom now. Someday, we will all be together in that place beyond all pain and misunderstanding.
