Cross released his debut album, 'Christopher Cross', in 1979, and it garnered him five Grammy Awards. He's the only artist in history to receive all of the "Big Four" Grammy Awards (for 'Best Record', 'Best Song', 'Best Album', and 'Best New Artist') in the same year. Hits from the critically acclaimed album, along with "Sailing" (a number one hit that remained within Billboard's Top 40 for over three months), include "Ride Like the Wind" (which was a #2 hit), "Never Be the Same" (going to #15), and "Say You'll Be Mine" (rising to #20). Critics such as Allmusic's Mike DeGagne have lauded Cross' " crisp and colorful" songwriting and "soothing voice".
Labeled as possibly having 'peaked too early' as time went on, Cross proved the doubters wrong with another number one hit in "Arthur's Theme" (also known as "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)"). A part of the Dudley Moore film 'Arthur', the track, as stated before, won him the Academy Award for Best Song in 1981 alongside co-composers Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen. Although his popularity has waxed and waned over the years since his 70s heyday, Cross has earned a reputation as one of the key artists playing what would become known as "yacht rock" alongside contemporaries such as Loggins & Messina.
Spinning

Got me spinning
Got me spinning 'round
Like I think I'm winning
It may take me a long long time
But I'm gonna find you out
It may take me a long long time
But I'm gonna find you out
It's only the beginning
You got me spinning 'round
Like I think I'm winning
The lyrics of the song "Spinning" by Christopher Cross revolve around a sense of infatuation that's heavily influenced by the idea of winning over a person one has got their hearts set on. The chorus of the song, consisting of the lines "Ooh wee, got me spinning, got me spinning 'round, like I think I'm winning" indicates the degree of intoxication caused by the feelings, combined with an undertone of a potential obsession. The verse “It may take me a long, long time but I'm gonna find you out" suggests that the person might not have openly reciprocated these emotions yet, but the singer is optimistic about uncovering them eventually. The line "It's only the beginning,” further reinforces the singer's attitude of starting a journey, an adventure, with this new infatuation.
Overall, the song seems to be about the first stages of a lopsided romance. The singer's infatuation has blinded him to the reality of the situation, hence the "spinning" feeling that he experiences. He is playing a game in his head where he thinks he's "winning" over the other person, but he hasn't even acquired their understanding or interest yet. The song then concludes with the chorus, “It's only the beginning, you got me spinning ‘round, like I think I'm winning." The singer's myopic attitude creates a sense of excitement and anticipation, coupled with a sense of urgency.
