Cross released his debut album, 'Christopher Cross', in 1979, and it garnered him five Grammy Awards. He's the only artist in history to receive all of the "Big Four" Grammy Awards (for 'Best Record', 'Best Song', 'Best Album', and 'Best New Artist') in the same year. Hits from the critically acclaimed album, along with "Sailing" (a number one hit that remained within Billboard's Top 40 for over three months), include "Ride Like the Wind" (which was a #2 hit), "Never Be the Same" (going to #15), and "Say You'll Be Mine" (rising to #20). Critics such as Allmusic's Mike DeGagne have lauded Cross' " crisp and colorful" songwriting and "soothing voice".
Labeled as possibly having 'peaked too early' as time went on, Cross proved the doubters wrong with another number one hit in "Arthur's Theme" (also known as "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)"). A part of the Dudley Moore film 'Arthur', the track, as stated before, won him the Academy Award for Best Song in 1981 alongside co-composers Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen. Although his popularity has waxed and waned over the years since his 70s heyday, Cross has earned a reputation as one of the key artists playing what would become known as "yacht rock" alongside contemporaries such as Loggins & Messina.
The Light is On

Is it mine
I was never the kind who could
Draw the line
Are you free
Unforgiven
Is the kind of world you could
Live in
It's alright
The light is on
The darkness has run to hide
It's alright
The light is on
But the darkness is just outside
Outside your window
Beating down
Making the sound of the rain
Drive you crazy
Make you lazy
You know it's only the rain!
Repeat: It's alright
The light is on
The lyrics of Christopher Cross's "The Light is On" is discussing the blurred lines between ownership, potential levels of freedom, and the ability to differentiate between right and wrong. The song speaks to someone who is struggling with determining the limits of their control over specific areas of their life. The first few lines, "Is it yours, Is it mine, I was never the kind who could draw the line," suggest that the singer might be facing a situation where an action was taken that may have stirred feelings of uncertainty. The lines refer to wanting to define ownership but finding it difficult to say who owns what. Similarly, there is a sense of immobility in the concept of being free and unforgiven; these two cannot coexist, and the confusion of which side to identify with could create an internal conflict.
The chorus, "It's alright, the light is on. The darkness has run to hide. It's alright, the light is on, but the darkness is just outside, outside your window," suggests that while there is a sense of comfort in knowing that the light is on, there is a looming sense of danger outside. The imagery of darkness outside the window crafts the idea of the singer being trapped in a space- inside the location with the light on or outside, where they feel unprotected. In either location, their actions are being monitored- they are accountable for what they do. The lines "Making the sound of the rain, drive you crazy, make you lazy, you know it's only the rain" refer to the fact that sometimes, our minds can be our biggest enemies. We can be swayed by illusions or a negative environment, but it's essential to realize that the situation may be entirely in our heads.

much younger, happier days when my family, friends were all still alive and I was still healthy. Where did the time go?

Andreas Vollenweider was getting music career started around this time, but somehow Cross caught the Vollenweider vibe with this song.
