Cross released his debut album, 'Christopher Cross', in 1979, and it garnered him five Grammy Awards. He's the only artist in history to receive all of the "Big Four" Grammy Awards (for 'Best Record', 'Best Song', 'Best Album', and 'Best New Artist') in the same year. Hits from the critically acclaimed album, along with "Sailing" (a number one hit that remained within Billboard's Top 40 for over three months), include "Ride Like the Wind" (which was a #2 hit), "Never Be the Same" (going to #15), and "Say You'll Be Mine" (rising to #20). Critics such as Allmusic's Mike DeGagne have lauded Cross' " crisp and colorful" songwriting and "soothing voice".
Labeled as possibly having 'peaked too early' as time went on, Cross proved the doubters wrong with another number one hit in "Arthur's Theme" (also known as "Arthur's Theme (Best That You Can Do)"). A part of the Dudley Moore film 'Arthur', the track, as stated before, won him the Academy Award for Best Song in 1981 alongside co-composers Burt Bacharach, Carole Bayer Sager, and Peter Allen. Although his popularity has waxed and waned over the years since his 70s heyday, Cross has earned a reputation as one of the key artists playing what would become known as "yacht rock" alongside contemporaries such as Loggins & Messina.
Words of Wisdom
Christopher Cross Lyrics

'Cause the pain is too deep inside
And the hurt of a love that is lost has no cure
But the love of another heart
Your friends try and say it will all get better
They say that they know how you feel
But your heart isn't sure 'cause it knows what it heard
All the things that it read in the letter
All the words of wisdom
Never seem to ease the pain
All the words of wisdom sound the same
All the lies of kindness
Oh that sweet refrain
But you pay the price for the joy that it brings
'Cause you hear the sound of her name
And the morning tries to save you
From the shadows of your heart
They dance and kiss as you reminisce
And it's tearing you apart
The lyrics of Christopher Cross's song "Words of Wisdom" delve into the pain and heartache that come with lost love. The singer of the song is struggling with the aftermath of a breakup, unable to escape the memories and the echoes of his former lover. Despite the advice and comfort of his friends, he cannot shake the grief that haunts him. The words of wisdom that are meant to ease his pain fall short, unable to provide any lasting relief. The refrain, "All the words of wisdom never seem to ease the pain," captures the hopeless feeling that comes with heartbreak. The singer is left alone to confront his pain, to endure the shadows of his broken heart that linger even in the morning light. The song reminds us of the vulnerability and fragility of love, and the toll it can take when it is lost.

My favourite song from Christopher Cross. I saw him play this live in 2019 on acoustic guitar, something I'll never forget. The nuance in his voice is spectacular.
