Ordinary Man
Christy Moore Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm an ordinary man, nothing special nothing grand
I've had to work for everything I own
I never asked for a lot, I was happy with what I got
Enough to keep my family and my home

Now they say that times are hard and they've handed me my cards
They say there's not the work to go around
And when the whistle blows, the gates will finally close
Tonight they're going to shut this factory down
Then they'll tear it d-o-w-n

I never missed a day nor went on strike for better pay
For twenty years I served them best I could
Now with a handshake and a cheque it seems so easy to forget
Loyalty through the bad times and through good
The owner says he's sad to see that things have got so bad
But the captains of industry won't let him lose
He still drives a car and smokes his cigar
And still he takes his family on a cruise, he'll never lose

Well it seems to me such a cruel irony
He's richer now then he ever was before
Now my cheque is spent and I can't afford the rent
There's one law for the rich, one for the poor
Every day I've tried to salvage some of my pride
To find some work so's I might pay my way
Oh but everywhere I go, the answer's always no
There's no work for anyone here today, no work today

I'm an ordinary man, nothing special nothing grand
I've had to work for everything I own
I never asked for a lot, I was happy with what I got
Enough to keep my family and my home

And so condemned I stand just an ordinary man
Like thousands beside me in the queue
I watch my darling wife trying to make the best of life
And God knows what the kids are going to do
Now that we are faced with this human waste
A generation cast aside
And as long as I live, I never will forgive

You've stripped me of my dignity and pride, you've stripped me bare
You've stripped me bare, You've stripped me bare

Overall Meaning

The song “Ordinary Man” by Christy Moore speaks of the plight of ordinary, hardworking people who are just trying to make a living for themselves and their families. The lyrics start by emphasizing how nothing special the singer is, just an average person who has worked hard for everything he has. He has never wanted much, but just enough to take care of his family and his home. However, despite doing everything right, the times have gotten tough, and the factory he has been working at for twenty years is closing down. The owner is sad about it, but he remains rich and unaffected, taking his family on cruises even as the workers are being let go.

The song speaks to the theme of economic injustice, where the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. The singer highlights the fact that the owner remains rich and well-off, while the workers who have given their loyalty and dedication to the factory are left with nothing. The closing of the factory has affected the singer and his family, as they struggle to find work and keep their dignity. The final verse speaks of the accumulated effect of economic injustice, where a whole generation is cast aside, stripped of their dignity and pride.

Overall, the song “Ordinary Man” speaks to the struggles of the working class, especially during times of economic turmoil, and highlights the importance of recognizing the humanity and dignity of all people regardless of their social status.

There's a little bit of ordinary and a lot of extraordinary to be found in any one of us. I love this song.

Mad Dad Lad

My old man God rest him used to love belting this out at the local. I knew the song by heart and he'd always be onto me to help him out if he forgot the lyrics. This was our tune and it always reminds me of him.

James Fennessy

Mad Dad Lad

+James Fennessy they were bud! One of the highlights of his life was seeing him live at the Marquee in Cork a few years back. He even took a snap of the gig and made it his phone's wallpaper and all. Miss the man terrible these days. His 1st anniversary is next month so I'm just going on a wee bit of trip down memory lane going over all his favourite tunes.
