Running Up That Hill
Chromatics Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
But you want to feel how it feels?
But you want to know, that it didn't hurt me?
But you wanna hear about the deal I'm making
You
You and me
You and me, won't be unhappy
Make a deal with God
Get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
Do you want to hurt me
See how deep the bullet lies
Unaware I'm tearing you asunder
There's a thunder in our hearts
Why is there so much hate for the ones we love?
Tell me, we both matter, don't we?
You
You and me
You and me, won't be unhappy
And if I only could
Make a deal with God
And get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
If I only could
Make a deal with God
I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
No poblems
You
You and me
You and me, won't be unhappy
C'mon baby, c'mon c'mon darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
C'mon angel, c'mon c'mon, darling
Let's exchange the experience
And if I only could
Make a deal with God
I'd get him to swap our places
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building, ooh
And if I only could
C'mon baby, c'mon c'mon darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
C'mon angel, c'mon c'mon, darling
Let's exchange the experience
C'mon baby, c'mon c'mon darling
Let me steal this moment from you now
C'mon angel, c'mon c'mon, darling
Let's exchange the experience
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building, ooh
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Be running up that road
Be running up that hill
Be running up that building
With no problems
In the opening lines of Chromatics' "Running Up That Hill" cover, the singer explores the concept of pain and empathy. The first two lines: "It doesn't hurt me, but you want to feel how it feels?" are a rhetorical question aimed at someone who wants to understand the singer's emotions. The singer then asks if they want to know that it didn't hurt her, before questioning whether they want to hear the deal she's making. The singer is trying to convey to the other person that they cannot understand her pain, no matter how much they try to empathize. The lyric "you and me, won't be unhappy" is a promise to the person listening, that the singer and the other person will not let their misunderstanding come between them.
The chorus of "Running Up That Hill" refers to wanting to trade places with someone, in this case with God. The singer expresses the desire to "be running up that road," "be running up that hill," and "be running up that building" as God. This implies that the singer wants a challenge and would like to overcome whatever obstacles come her way. The song suggests that even with God-given talent or ability, the struggle is still present. The line, "Do you want to hurt me see how deep the bullet lies?" implies that even the person she's talking to, who might understand her pain, cannot relate entirely.

The chromatics pretty much are essential for night time driving. They have that haunting quality that just works better for a night time drive.

AGREED.

I literally used to frequently drive down this road in the video (95 in Northern Virginia) down to Williamsburg, which is a 3 1/2 hour+ drive at night, and would frequently play Chromatics and Grimes, both excellent night music choices.
