I'm Taking About You
Chuck Berry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let me tell you 'bout a girl I know
I met her walkin' down a uptown street
She's so fine you know I wished she was mine
I get shook up every time we meet

I'm talkin' 'bout you
Nobody but you
Yeah, I do mean you
I'm just trying to get a message to you

Let me tell you 'bout a girl I know
I tell ya now she looks so good
Got so much skills and such a beautiful will
She oughta be somewhere in Hollywood

I'm talkin' 'bout you
Nobody but you
Come on, give me a cue
So I can get a message to you

Let me tell you 'bout a girl I know
She's sittin' right here by my side
Lovely indeed that's why I asked if she
Promised someday she would be my bride

I'm talkin' 'bout you
I do mean you

Nobody but you
Come on, let me get a message through

Overall Meaning

In Chuck Berry's classic song "I'm Talking About You," the lyrics describe a girl that he met while walking down an uptown street. This girl is so fine that Berry wishes she was his, and he gets "shook up" every time they meet. He then goes on to describe her physical appearance and her talent, saying that she should be "somewhere in Hollywood."

As the song progresses, Berry reveals that the girl he's been talking about is sitting right beside him. He describes her as lovely and admits that he has asked her to marry him someday. The song is a love letter of sorts, with Berry trying to get a message to this girl, professing his love and adoration for her.

RIP, Chuck. This was the very first bass riff I ever learned. My dad taught it to me when I was 13.

Agree with both.

Tim Murray Detroit Tracks

Rock and Roll at it's best, had a blast recording  it with great Detroit musicians.

The Beatles covered this in Hamburg and man.... it sounds like it could be on an early punk album over a decade later. Great song

TheNeonRabbit

Paul also stole the bass line for "I saw her standing there"

DedGzus

@TheNeonRabbit nah he "sampled" it

Michael Levine

Sir Paul long ago credited Chuck with this exact bass line in "ISHST".
The "lads" utilized riffs, bass lines, chord progressions, harmonies, etc. from artists/groups that had influenced them. So, Chuck, Little Richard, Elvis, Carl Perkins, Everly Bros, The Shirelles, Dylan, Roy Orbison and many other luminaries all inspired them to cover their works, synthesize their styles and create a myriad of masterpieces of their own.
Hats off to ALL of them! 😁👍🥂🍾🎼🎶🎸🥁🎹🎤🔊😋
