I Remember You
Chuck Hedges Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces all day through
In that small cafe, the park across the way
The children's carousel,
The chestnut trees, the wishing well

I'll be seeing you in every lovely summer's day
In everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way

I'll find you in the morning' sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you
I'll find you in the morning sun
And when the night is new

I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

Overall Meaning

Chuck Hedges's song I Remember You is a nostalgic and bittersweet ode to a lost love. The opening lines, "I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places / That this heart of mine embraces all day through," conjure up images of the singer wandering through familiar haunts, haunted by memories of the past. The singer remembers the small cafe, the park across the way, the children's carousel, the chestnut trees, and the wishing well as places where he and his love had shared moments of joy and intimacy. The lyrics suggest that even though the love may be gone, the memories and feelings associated with it remain deeply ingrained in the singer's psyche.

The second stanza continues this theme of finding traces of the lost love in the everyday world. The singer acknowledges that he will always think of his love when he sees "every lovely summer's day" and everything that is "light and gay." The final stanza is a poignant expression of the singer's yearning for his lost love. He imagines himself finding her in the morning sun and the new night, gazing at the moon but seeing her face instead.
