I couldn't tell, because I can clearly uderstand what Chuck is saying, but I never could understand anything except the I keep forgetting line of Michael's version. A song means nothing if a singer is intelligible.

This arrangement by Teacho Wiltshire turns the song into a master class. The only song with such an effect to me is Gladys Knight TAKE ME IN YOUR ARMS AND LOVE ME........Pleased I found it again

@tomovox I don't remember this on the pop station in San Fran. Chuck had a tough time maintaining a crossover status other than with Any Day Now. Remember, pop stations weren't bending over backwards to create stars out of black artists, especially if they came from a label called Wand. steve

@@srercrcrthe writers of this own the publishing to Michael McDonalds version BECAUSE it’s considered an interpolation. I don’t know if they sued about this or what, but that’s what it is. They have 50% publishing on Warren G’s “regulate”. That may be why the comparison. I’m shocked about this, because the only thing that’s similar is the words “I keep forgetting” and the way he says it, after that it’s a completely different song every time it’s said.

Apart from the opening line and refrain, the two songs (Michael Mcdonald's song and this one) have absolutely nothing in common. They don't sound anything alike (of course they won't since they come from two very different eras of music). The writers of this song deserve credit but not nearly as much as you seem to think they do.
Also, you do know that rappers don't pick their samples by racial quotas right? If that was the case, Puff Daddy wouldn't have sampled Sting and The Police, and Tupac wouldn't have sampled Bobby Caldwell and Bruce Hornsby

For the not too bright folks in the room talking about Micheal McDonald’s version not sounding alike. It doesn’t have to sound like it. It’s lyrical content and it’s use and there’s something called “polarization”. The word phrasing and context are same and the verbiage are the same. McDonald’s phrasing was the same. There were MILLIONS of ways to interpret and sing that opening line but McDonald chose the same exact characterization of the original song. 🤷🏾

It's just 4/4. It's pretty syncopated but also has a pretty clear 3, 3, 2. clave. The hits are mostly on 1 4 and 7 if you're counting eighth notes.

@@melissasmith6762 If I was one of the writers of this song and I heard Michael McDonald's song, I'd hit the roof and ring my lawyer immediately. It may be only the first line of this song, but that first line is the CORE element of Michael McDonald's song, the whole music groove is written around that phrase and it's used as a repetitive theme, over and over, the same melody. MMcD song is basically a jump-off point from the first line of this. So if I was Leiber & Stoller, I'd want a large chunk of publishing for it.

I doubt anything in copyright law allows people to own the delivery of 3 words but I'm not expert. I think the core element of the song is that awesome melody. If he had changed the lyrics to "I'm thin--king-that...we're not in love anymore" you'd have no case, so you're asking for ownership of three words.

'I. Keep. Forgettin. You-Don't-Love-Me-No-More' and Michaels version goes on to use that phrase as the basis of the song. The bass and drum groove is rooted in the way that first line is sung, the rhythm of it. It virtually spawns MMcD's whole song. So it's more than just the first three words in the sentence. It forms the basis of the song. And I wouldn't be asking for ownership, as there's obviously much more to the MMcD song BUT it has its absolute genesis, musically, rhythmically and lyrically in that one line, so I'd be looking for a co-credit.
