Jackson startd out as a gospel singer in The Raspberry Singers. He was in the Dell-Vikings from 1957 to 1959.
After recording as Charles Jackson for the Clock label in 1959 he signed with Wand Records in 1961. He was immediately successful with his first single I Don't Want To Cry which reached No. 5 R&B, No. 36 Pop in the USA. He was with Wand through most of the sixties, scoring several R&B and Pop hits. In 1969 he moved to Motown but didn't do so well there. He continued to record throughout the seventies for labels like ABC, All Platinum and EMI America, scoring his last R&B hit in 1980.
Although never hugely successful his soulful voice resulted in 23 R&B top 100 singles in the USA and the same number of US Pop 100 hits over the course of 20 years.
Several of Jackson's songs later became hits for other artists including Ronnie Milsap, whose 1982 cover version of "Any Day Now" reached No. 1 on the Country and Adult Contemporary charts. Michael McDonald covered "I Keep Forgettin'" with much success. "I Keep Forgettin'" was also covered by David Bowie on his album "Tonight".
On 4 October 2015, Chuck Jackson was inducted into the Rhythm and Blues Music Hall of Fame.

I get a feeling that I never, never had before
And I got to tell you right now
I believe, I really do believe that
Something's got a hold on me
(Oh, it must be love)
Something's got a hold on me right now child(Yeah, it must be love)
Let me tell you now
I never felt like this before
Something's got a hold on me that won't let go
I believe I'd die if I only could
I sure feel strange, but I sure feel good
I said, oh yeah
It must be love
(You know it must be love)
Let me tell you now
Something's got a hold on me
(Oh, it must be love)
Something's got a hold on me right now child
(Yeah, it must be love)
Let me tell you now
I got a feeling, I feel so strange
Everything about me seems to have changed
Step by step, I got a brand new walk
I even sound sweeter when I talk
I said, oh yeah
It must be love
(You know it must be love)
My heart feels heavy, my feet feel light
I shake all over, but I feel alright
I never felt like this before
Something's got a hold on me that won't let go
I never thought it could happen to me
My heart was heavy when in misery
I never thought it could be this way
Love's sure gonna put a hurting on me
I said oh yeah
It must be love
(You know it must be love)
Yeah he walks kike love
(Yeah he walks like love)
And he talks like love
(And he talks like love)
Makes me feel alright
(Makes me feel alright)
In the middle of the night
(In the middle of the night)
Na na na na!
In the lyrics of Chuck Jackson's song "Something's Got A Hold On Me," the singer expresses a profound and transformative experience of love. From the very beginning, he describes a sense of heightened emotion and intuition, suggesting that he is encountering a feeling like never before. This sets the stage for the revelation that something powerful and overwhelming has taken hold of him. The repeated assertions that "it must be love" emphasize the magnitude of this force that is influencing his thoughts and actions.
As the song progresses, the singer delves deeper into the impact of this love on his being. He describes feeling like he is in uncharted territory, both mentally and physically, as if every aspect of himself is undergoing a profound change. This sense of being consumed by love is further emphasized by the imagery of feeling heavy yet light, and shaking all over while still feeling alright. The contrast between the heaviness of his heart and the lightness of his feet reflects the emotional intensity and liberation that love can bring.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of surrendering to love, as the singer expresses a willingness to die if that were a possibility, showcasing the all-encompassing nature of his feelings. Despite the strangeness of these new sensations, there is an underlying sense of contentment and joy that comes through in his words. The transformation he undergoes, from the way he walks to the way he talks, indicates a newfound confidence and happiness that only love can bring.
Towards the end of the song, the singer reflects on how love has surprised him and taken him by storm. Despite initially feeling heavy with misery, he acknowledges that love has the power to uplift and transform even the darkest of emotions. The realization that love can bring both joy and pain is encapsulated in the bittersweet acknowledgment that "Love's sure gonna put a hurting on me." Ultimately, the song captures the complexities and depths of love, highlighting its ability to profoundly change an individual and impact every aspect of their being.

Fabulous singer. Great song. More people need exposure to great singers of the past. They put these youngsters to shame.
