Prophet released his solo debut Brother Aldo in 1990 on Fire records,(later reissued in the late 1990's on Walter Yetnikoff's Velvel imprint. His immediate career path took him through mostly European touring markets and his followup "Balinese Dancer" came out in 1993 & later the Steve Berlin produced "Feast of Hearts" came out in Europe only through the Fire imprint. After a decade long bout with substance abuse, Prophet resurfaced refreshed and renewed on the critical breakthroughs 1998's "Homemade Blood", 2000's "The Hurting Business" and 2002's live "Turn The Pigeons Loose" (all available via Cooking Vinyl in UK). By 2000 he'd recorded a side project with his wife Stefanie called Go Go Market and begun incorporating electronic influences into his traditional roots rock formula, resulting in some mainstream radio play and expanded exposure, culminating in the wider distribution of albums "No Other Love" from 2002 and 2004's "Age of Miracles" on New West Records. Chuck signed a new arrangement in the US with North Carolina based Yep Roc for 2007's "Soap and Water", an album that saw the musician invited to play twice on National Public Radio, as well as on televison talk shows like Late Night With David Letterman, and The Carson Daly Show.
Over the years he also began collaborating with other songwriters like Kelly Willis, Steve Yerkey and contributing as a guitarist/musician to studio efforts from folks like Jonathan Richman, Warren Zevon, Kim Carnes, Cake, Tom Heyman and Jewel. Alejandro Escovedo's upcoming 2008 release produced by Tony Visconti entitled Real Animal was co-written and recorded with Prophet. In addition to having his songs recorded by artists like Solomon Burke, Heart & Cyndi Thomson he has also recorded with men who started out as his influences like Jim Dickinson, Dan Penn and the late Warren Zevon.

A Woman's Voice
Chuck Prophet Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It happens all the time
You start up down the middle
End up parted on the side
Yes, a woman's voice will drug you
And lead you all around
Way down, past the bus station
Oh, sweet baby, stay right where you are
I just wanna get up and turn on the light
What's so great about the dark?
Woman's voice can drug you
She'll be lookin' for the chance
If you're lucky she might roll you like duct tape
You'll be entwined in a modern dance
Yeah, a woman's voice can drug you
Till you cannot feel your legs
Every syllable's like an ocean
Every word a frozen lake
Oh, sweet darlin', you [Incomprehensible]
Soon, we'll both be eatin' cake
You let me know when enough is enough
When enough is enough
A woman's voice can drug you
Like an AM radio
Yeah, like a motorcycle preacher
Like a Sunday far from home
Yes, a woman's voice can drug you
Through a red light in the rain
From the top of De Longpre Avenue
To the bottom of the drain, okay
Oh, sweet baby, stay right where you are
I just wanna get up and turn on the light
What's so great about the dark?
What's so great about the dark?
A woman's voice can drug you
And all your circuits gonna harm
You'll put on that stupid cape and smile
Fly straight into the sun
Yes, a woman's voice can drug you
So spend it while you can
Yeah, you may not believe me
But she used to call me senator
Just like Joan Crawford
She let me know who was the man
Oh, a woman's voice can drug you
Right up off your feet, it's glorious
Your wait just could be right over
Alright son, you go ahead and grab a seat
A woman's voice can drug you
Chuck Prophet's song "A Woman's Voice" explores the alluring and possibly dangerous power of women's voices. Prophet emphasizes how a woman's voice can captivate and "drug" you, leading you to change your path and follow her wherever she may lead. Throughout the song, Prophet describes how a woman's voice can lead you to dangerous and intriguing places, like past the bus station or through a red light in the rain. He also highlights that every word a woman says feels like an ocean and every syllable feels like a frozen lake. However, Prophet seems to caution against being completely controlled by a woman's voice, as he suggests that "you let me know when enough is enough."
Overall, Chuck Prophet's "A Woman's Voice" presents an interesting exploration of the captivating power of women's voices. While acknowledging their seductive appeal, Prophet also reminds listeners to be wary of relinquishing all control and only follow when it feels right.
