In The Beginning
Chuck Roberts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the beginning there was Jack
And Jack had a groove.
And from this groove
Came the grooves of all grooves
And while one day vicously throwing down on his box
Jack boldly declared, let there be house.
And house music was born.
I am u see, I am the creator and this is my house.
And in my house there was only house music
But i am not so selvish,
Because once you enter my house
It then becomes our house and our house music

And you see no ONE man ownes house
Because house music is a universal language
Spoken and understood by all
You see House is a feeling
That no one can understand really
Unless you are deep in to the vibe of house
House is a uncontrolable desire to jack your body

And as i told you before
This is our house and our house music
And every house you understand there is a keeper
And in this house the keeper is JACK

Now some you might wonder,
Who is JACK and what is it that JACK does

JACK is the one who gives you the power Jack your body
JACK is the one who gives you the power to do the snake
JACK is the one who gives you the key to the wiggly worm
JACK is the one who learnes you how to walk your body
JACK is the one that can bring nations and nations of all jackels together under one house

You may be black
You may be white
You may be Jew or Gentile.

It don't make a difference in our house
And this is fresh

Overall Meaning

Chuck Robert's song "In The Beginning" is an ode to House Music, a genre of electronic dance music that emerged from club cultures in Chicago, Illinois in the early 1980s. The song embraces the origins of House Music, which started in the early club scene with DJs like Frankie Knuckles, Larry Levan, and Ron Hardy. The song begins with the creator of the groove, Jack, and how he boldly declared 'let there be house.' The song then declares that House Music is a universal language that is spoken and understood by all, emphasizing that no one man owns House. Instead, it is a feeling that can only be understood by those who are 'deep into the vibe of house.'

The lyrics go on to describe how House Music is an uncontrollable desire to 'jack your body,' a phrase that refers to dance styles typical of House Music. The song makes it clear that this is not just Jack's house but becomes 'our house' once we enter, and we all come together under the House Music banner. The lyrics emphasize that there is a keeper in every house, and in this case, it is Jack, who teaches you how to move and groove to House Music. In the end, the song celebrates diversity and unity, emphasizing that it does not matter who you are; in our house, we are all one.

I am and always will be an old school house music junky. House music is definitely a spiritual experience, and one must have soul, passion, rhythm (or lack of... house music will show you the way) and a love for all things and all people to truly understand the essence of house music. Much love, respect, and gratitude to the producers and cast of this fantastic piece of melodic artwork. You amazing folks have given me many years of great music and kept me sane in some of my darkest hours. Long live house music!

The fact is correct, "The name of music called HOUSE was given in Chicago due to the artist creating tracks in their homes of Chicago" Wayne Williams stated correctly. Terry Hunter stated, "HOUSE music started in the late 1970's by Frankie Knuckles a Bronx, New York, transplant to Chicago". Correct as well. New York and North Jersey called it, "CLUB", or "KLUB", due to venues it was played and those that played it. Monique Bingham stated that fact correctly, "Paradise Garage", and "Larry Levan", (Laurence Philpot), from Brooklyn, New York. He and Frankie Knuckles were youth friend's and they both D.J.'s. They attended the same school and were youth going to the same venues together in New York City. They both vied for the residency at Paradise Garage and it was awarded to Larry Levan. A school security guard who relocated to Chicago convinced Frankie Knuckles to relocate to Chicago upon his purchase of a building and convert it into a venue. The former New York City school security guard saw both Frankie and Larry at a venue in New York City as underage school students with the mutual agreement not to disclose information in exchange for classified personal loyalty. Prior to 1977 the exclusive private parties at David Mancuso's Loft were the location that groomed both Frankie and Larry. These are the facts and not fictional.

@XTRABIG

Good stuff bro!! And... That Club in Chicago was called the "Warehouse". It was considered a gay club. In NYC gay clubs at the time were still illegal. Frankie Knuckles was the Premier headline DJ at the WareHouse. The recordings of his sets there were known as "house tapes" so called after the name of the club. Those tapes were highly sought after in Detroit, Chicago, NY, UK. Thus, House music got its name from those tapes because folks didn't know what to call this new genre of upbeat RnB/disco. A similar thing occurred with tapes of Larry Levan, from Brooklyn NY playing at Paradise Garage. The "garage tapes" was also a reference for the type of music created and played at the PG.

Please let me know if I've misstated anything. Thanks.

@JohnnyCotton47

Thank you, Brian Brown and XTRABIG for all this info! 😀😀🙏🙏
