His most successful recording was "C. C. Rider," which topped the rhythm and blues chart in 1957 and also sold well in the pop market. He died suddenly of peritonitis while at the peak of his career, just after "What Am I Living For?", backed by "Hang Up My Rock & Roll Shoes", was released.

His hit "It's Too Late (She's Gone)" was covered by many, including Otis Redding, Roy Orbison, Eric Clapton's Derek and the Dominos and the Grateful Dead. In 2005, it was heavily sampled by Kanye West on Late Registration's "Gone."

I'm glad to hear the information. I've learned a lot about popular music since joining YouTube. This is one of his earlier Okeh discs, the flip-side is 'I Tried' a love ballad not a jump blues at all. I wish someone would post a video of him singing on American Bandstand, that would be something to see! Thanks for your comments.

it's a true story! It's one of the funny memories they share when all of us get together (which is VERY rare. We haven't been together since their mother died. Now, as far as I know, the album is in Idaho. My mother had a chance to steal it about 16 years ago, but didn't take it...

King Of The Stroll, nice album on Atlantic label from 1958. Wish I had a copy of it. There's always some on eBay, but they can get expensive.

Yes, I know what you mean. This is closer to the jump blues that by the early 50's was going out of style. I have some of his later Atlantic discs and they really are R&B.

Darn, it was 4 years ago and another you tube, a good you tube then. I am seldom here now as the gooogle people have tdestryed it. I know that Chuck, as you say, 'invented' The Stroll. I like some Jump Blues...damn, I like almost anything that rocks from the 30's - eary 60's and some more.

All good, and I certainly understand your sentiments about Youtube and Google. I'm 48 years old, My mother had Willis' "King of the Stroll" album when she was a kid. Now, her and her 3 siblings argue over who bought it. It's been known to disappear from one house and magically reappear in one of the other houses...LOL!

I had a look at my LP (Charly R&B) and liner notes by Cliff White says: Willis was one of the youngest and last of the urban blues/jump blues singers that came to prominence in late '40s-early '50s, and on the other, one of the oldest and first of the next wave, the urbane stand up singers whose cross over in 2nd half of the '50s rode the bridge to the Soul revolution in the '60s. So this LP, w/16 songs that span the years 1956-58 sound, in my ears pretty different from your post.

Must say that he sound or the music style here sound VERY different vs. the Chuck Willis records I have. Guess this is some kind of jump blues and that have never really attracted me. Like much more his: "My Life", "Ease the Pain", "Thunder and Lightning", "Keep A Drivin'" etc...but everyone have his/her own taste.

I say, OMG if someone posted him on American Bandstand. But tapes might gathering dust in Dick Clark's vaults. I just can't understand this Clark. He's gonna be 80 in Nov this year and I heard that Eddie Cochran - if you have visited my channel here & gangerollo you know I'm a huge fan of Ed - did several more filmed apperances on Clark's show than the 3 ones you can find on YT. But they can't be found, they are still in Clark's vaults. Why? I could kill, watching Ed do "Jeanie Jeanie Jeanie"

This man practically invented "The Stroll". At the time his race was not allowed to be given credit for it, either. Look up "The Stroll", and you will know that he was before our time, and had a hand in "re-inventing" rock and R&B as we know it today. Regardless of "jump blues" that you don't like, it's in the appreciation of the music and its style. Hell, I don't like rap of today, nor all Madonna, but, I can listen to something without dismissing it. Yup: 4 years ago you posted.

Cont...but unlike the majority of older R&B stars, he succesefully traversed the mid '50s watershed to find a youyngish integrated audience. Was one of the first blacl artists to appear nationally-networked, pop oriented, teen 'n' twenty TV show, American Bandstand. I'm not trying to hold a lecture here, lol, but it was very interesting to read this by White - long ago since I read it, seems like I never read it - and hear his ealier style on this record.
